New Delhi, July 10, 2025 – Manipal Hospitals has taken over Pune-based Sahyadri Hospitals in a major move to deepen its footprint in India’s healthcare sector. The deal from global investor Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan hasn’t been officially priced, but people close to the matter suggest it’s valued at over ₹6,000 crore.

Strengthening Pan-India Presence with Western India Focus

With this strategic acquisition, Manipal Hospitals will bring 11 more facilities under its existing network, expanding it to a total of 49 hospitals. The new additions span cities like Pune, Nashik, Ahilya Nagar, and Karad, and will take the group’s total bed capacity to around 12,000, placing it among the largest hospital chains in the country.

“This move is a step forward in our ongoing effort to bring Manipal’s trusted healthcare across India,” said Dilip Jose, MD & CEO of Manipal Health Enterprises. “With the continued backing of valued stakeholders like Temasek and the confidence of our investors, we’re excited to grow our presence.”

Ontario Teachers’ Exit and Sahyadri’s Growth

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, a majority investor in Sahyadri since 2022, has now exited the company. In that time, Sahyadri has grown into one of Maharashtra’s largest hospital networks, with over 1,400 beds across the state.

“This is a big step forward for us,” said Ranjan Pai, Chairman of Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG). “It strengthens our presence in western India and helps us move closer to our goal of building a truly national healthcare network.”

Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, a global investor with net assets of USD 194 billion as of December 31, 2024, had invested in Sahyadri to scale its regional healthcare offerings. With this acquisition, Manipal Hospitals continues its aggressive growth strategy, further consolidating its leadership in the Indian private healthcare landscape.
