Mumbai, October 14: Indian equity benchmarks ended lower in volatile trade on Wednesday, giving up ground after the previous session’s sharp rally as elevated crude oil prices, persistent foreign investor outflows and weakness in financial and cyclical stocks weighed on sentiment. The BSE Sensex fell 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to close at 72,781.89, while the NSE Nifty 50 declined 99.25 points, or 0.44%, to settle at 22,622.70, remaining below the 22,650 mark.

The decline followed a rally of around 1.6% in both benchmarks on Tuesday, led by information technology stocks after HCL Technologies reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings. The recovery, however, failed to ease broader market concerns as crude oil prices climbed towards $107 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, while foreign portfolio investors continued to sell Indian equities.

Investors remained cautious despite the IT-led rebound, with sustained foreign outflows and oil-related inflation risks clouding the near-term outlook. FPIs sold shares worth Rs 1,305 crore on Tuesday, extending their selling streak to 13 consecutive sessions. Year-to-date outflows had reached a record $32.52 billion. Domestic institutional investors provided some support, purchasing shares worth Rs 2,439 crore on Tuesday.

Market breadth remained positive despite the fall in the headline indices, with 2,351 shares advancing, 1,694 declining and 129 remaining unchanged. The Nifty midcap and smallcap indices ended with marginal losses, reflecting a mixed trend across the broader market.

IT, energy and FMCG stocks gain; pharma drags

The Nifty IT index continued to outperform, extending its recovery after gaining 5.2% on Tuesday. Infosys and Tech Mahindra were among the Nifty 50’s top gainers, alongside Nestle India, Tata Consumer Products and Coal India. Information technology, energy, oil and gas, media and FMCG stocks advanced around 0.5-1%, offering some support to the benchmarks.

In contrast, auto, metal, pharma, realty and private banking stocks declined between 0.5% and 1.7%. The Nifty Pharma index was among the worst performers, while financial stocks also faced selling pressure. Shriram Finance, HDFC Life Insurance, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance and SBI Life Insurance featured among the Nifty 50’s leading laggards.

Stock-specific earnings developments continued to drive action. Tata Elxsi rose 5.7% after reporting higher quarterly profit, supported by its transportation and media businesses. Bharat Coking Coal advanced 5.3% after increasing basic prices for certain grades of raw coking coal sold to the non-regulated sector. Zydus Lifesciences, however, declined 0.7% after a US drug regulator concluded an inspection at its Ahmedabad manufacturing plant with five observations.

Crude oil near $107 keeps investors cautious

Oil prices remained a major concern for Indian equities. Brent crude rose towards $107 per barrel as traders weighed supply risks from fighting involving Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis and Saudi Arabia against the prospect of increased diesel supplies from Russia. Higher crude prices could raise India’s import bill, complicate the inflation outlook and put pressure on corporate margins and the rupee.

The oil price surge comes at a time when foreign investors have been reducing their exposure to Indian equities, amplifying concerns about the sustainability of the recent market recovery. While domestic institutional buying has helped cushion some of the selling pressure, persistent FPI outflows remain a significant headwind.

What lies ahead for Dalal Street?

Investors will track September-quarter earnings, crude oil movements and foreign fund flows for fresh direction. The Nifty’s ability to hold above 22,600 will remain important in the near term, while the 22,650-22,700 zone could act as an immediate hurdle.

With oil prices elevated and foreign investors continuing to sell, the broader market outlook remains cautious despite strength in select IT stocks. Earnings-driven stock-specific moves are likely to remain prominent, while a more sustained recovery may require easing crude prices and an improvement in foreign investor sentiment.
