Mumbai, August 6: Indian benchmark indices ended higher in a volatile session on Thursday, with gains in banking and heavyweight stocks helping offset weakness in metal, realty and IT counters. Investor sentiment remained supported by encouraging June-quarter earnings, hopes of easing tensions in the Middle East and the Reserve Bank of India’s optimistic economic outlook, although weekly derivatives expiry and the new closing auction methodology kept volatility elevated.
The BSE Sensex rose 373.76 points, or 0.48%, to close at 78,954.76, while the Nifty 50 added 11.35 points, or 0.05%, to end at 24,636, holding above the 24,600 mark. Market breadth was nearly even, with 2,023 stocks advancing, 2,058 declining and 200 remaining unchanged.
Reliance, SBI, BEL among top gainers
Heavyweights Reliance Industries, State Bank of India (SBI), Bharat Electronics (BEL), Eternal and Titan Company were the biggest contributors to the Nifty’s gains. On the losing side, Power Grid Corporation, Tata Steel, TCS, JSW Steel and Bajaj Auto capped the benchmark’s advance.
Stock-specific action dominated trade as investors reacted to quarterly earnings. Navin Fluorine gained after reporting a doubling in June-quarter profit, while Neuland Laboratories rallied sharply following a multi-fold jump in quarterly earnings. Defence major HAL advanced after a broker upgrade, Allcargo Logistics surged on strong quarterly numbers, and Morepen Laboratories extended its post-results rally.
PSU banks outperform; metals, realty lag
Among sectoral indices, Nifty PSU Bank emerged as the best performer, climbing 2.2%, followed by Nifty Oil & Gas, which gained 0.8%.
Selling pressure was visible in cyclical sectors. Nifty Media and Nifty Realty fell 1.3% each, while Nifty Auto and Nifty Metal declined 1% apiece. The Nifty IT index slipped 0.9%.
Mixed trend in broader markets
The broader market delivered a mixed performance. The Nifty Midcap 100 index fell 0.4%, reflecting profit booking after recent gains, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index added 0.5%, as investors chased opportunities in smaller companies.
Global cues, earnings remain key drivers
Markets drew support from hopes that diplomatic progress involving the U.S. and Iran could ease geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, helping keep crude oil prices stable. Stronger-than-expected June-quarter earnings also continued to underpin sentiment. However, traders remained cautious amid weekly options expiry and the implementation of the new closing auction mechanism for Sensex derivatives, which has increased late-session volatility.
Going forward, analysts expect stock-specific moves to dominate as the earnings season gathers pace. Foreign institutional investor flows, crude oil prices and developments surrounding Middle East negotiations are likely to remain key triggers for domestic equities in the near term.
