16th October 2025: On Diwali, Indian stock markets open, for one hour only, for the special session of “Muhurat Trading“. This ceremonial trading period represents the opening of the Hindu financial year, known as “Samvat”. The stock markets will remain closed for regular trading activities. Still, exchanges like the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) facilitate this one-hour trading session for investors, believing it is a time for prosperity and good fortune.

“Muhurat trading” is more than just a trading session; it is a spiritual and cultural time when wealth creation is combined with tradition.

Significance of Muhurat Trading

Muhurat Trading has a rich tradition in India. Without any form of regulation, it commenced in 1957 on the BSE, and NSE started its own Muhurat Trading session in 1992. The time of this session is centred around Lakshmi Puja, during which worshippers pay tribute to the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Investors view this as a good time to make new investments or trades for the next year. Though it is ceremonial in nature, the practice purveys an air of hopefulness that initiating a financial venture during the auspicious time will produce promising results in the future.

Muhurat Trading 2025: Date and Timing

In 2025, Muhurat Trading will take place on Tuesday, October 21, between 1:45 PM and 2:45 PM, for all segments, including equities, derivatives, and securities lending. Unlike previous years, where the Muhurat Trading was in the evening, this year the session has been moved to the afternoon. Even when the time for trading is more limited, the event still draws a crowd of retail and institutional participants, which contributes to the market’s festive and positive atmosphere.

Why Investors Take Part

Numerous investors engage in investing not only for the prospect of returns but also for the symbolic meaning it holds. It is also an opportune time to capitalise on the ability to start the Samvat year positively, rebalance portfolios, or add to stocks they view as fundamentally compelling.

Overall, market sentiment on the day of Muhurat trading is predominantly bullish (but there are various exceptions in the past few years when the markets moved negatively); traders approach their trades with excitement, and enthusiasm and faith abound. Furthermore, financial experts typically advise against impulsively trading based on emotions, emphasising instead a focus on disciplined, long-term investment approaches grounded in good analysis.

A Union of Faith and Finance

Apart from being a market occurrence, Muhurat Trading encapsulates India’s unique spirit of intertwining spirituality and economic ambitions. Muhurat Trading reassures many that wealth is not solely dependent on timing but also on patience and strategy, all while having faith in the long-term upside. As Diwali 2025 draws closer, investors can expect another year of hope, growth, and financial light.
