16^th October 2025: On Diwali, Indian stock markets open, for one hour only, for the special session of “Muhurat Trading“. This ceremonial trading period represents the opening of the Hindu financial year, known as “Samvat”. The stock markets will remain closed for regular trading activities. Still, exchanges like the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) facilitate this one-hour trading session for investors, believing it is a time for prosperity and good fortune.

“Muhurat trading” is more than just a trading session; it is a spiritual and cultural time when wealth creation is combined with tradition.

Significance of Muhurat Trading

Muhurat Trading has a rich tradition in India. Without any form of regulation, it commenced in 1957 on the BSE, and NSE started its own Muhurat Trading session in 1992. The time of this session is centred around Lakshmi Puja, during which worshippers pay tribute to the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Investors view this as a good time to make new investments or trades for the next year. Unlike previous years, where the Muhurat Trading was in the evening, this year the session has been moved to the afternoon. Even when the time for trading is more limited, the event still draws a crowd of retail and institutional participants, which contributes to the market’s festive and positive atmosphere.
