Mumbai, July 8: Trade on Wednesday ended on a mixed note, with selective buying in energy, metals and auto stocks helping a handful of Nifty 50 constituents finish in positive territory, even as selling pressure weighed on aviation, financial and consumer-facing names.

ONGC emerged as the top performer on the index, gaining 1.15% to close at ₹247.00. It was followed by Bajaj Auto, which rose 0.65%, while Hindalco Industries and Coal India also ended the session with modest gains.

On the other hand, InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) was the biggest drag, falling 5.10%. Jio Financial Services declined 5.02%, while Shriram Finance, Maruti Suzuki, Hindustan Unilever, and Tata Consumer Products also finished lower.

Selling Dominates Despite Pockets of Strength

The session saw gains limited to a handful of stocks, with ONGC benefiting from buying interest while Bajaj Auto and Hindalco also managed to stay in positive territory. Coal India rounded out the list of gainers, reflecting selective interest in commodity-linked counters.

Losses, however, were broader. IndiGo and Jio Financial Services witnessed sharp declines, while heavyweight names such as Maruti Suzuki, Hindustan Unilever, Bajaj Finance and Kotak Mahindra Bank also closed in the red, keeping overall market sentiment subdued.

 Conclusion

Wednesday’s market action highlighted a clear divide within the benchmark index. While ONGC, Bajaj Auto and Hindalco provided some support, steep declines in IndiGo, Jio Financial Services and Shriram Finance outweighed the limited gains, leaving the Nifty 50 with a largely negative bias by the closing bell.
