Patel Engineering’s L1 status for a ₹1,593 crore Nepal hydropower project supports order book visibility, with shares posting modest gains.

Mumbai, April 23: Patel Engineering Limited has started the financial year on a steady note, securing a key position in an international hydropower project that plays directly to its core strengths.
The company has been declared the lowest bidder for Package 2 of the 669 MW Lower Arun Hydropower Project in Nepal by SJVN Lower Arun Power Development Company. As per its exchange filing, the contract is valued at ₹1,593.08 crore, inclusive of VAT.
The contract involves constructing long head race tunnels, pressure shafts, surge shafts, and a range of hydro-mechanical systems that form the backbone of the project. The execution timeline stretches over 54 months, reflecting both the scale and complexity.
Stock Market Snapshot
The market reaction was calm but positive. Patel Engineering share price moved slightly higher on April 23, 2026, as investors took note of the order win.
The stock traded at ₹28.72, up 1.31% as of 11:04 IST, compared with the previous close of ₹28.35. The movement was gradual, not sharp, which is typical for EPC players where order wins add visibility but revenues flow in over time.
Strategic Importance Of The Order
This project fits neatly into Patel Engineering’s long-standing expertise in hydropower and tunnelling.
The Lower Arun project is a significant development for Nepal as it continues to tap into its hydropower potential. For Patel Engineering, being part of such a project reinforces its position in a niche segment that demands both engineering depth and execution discipline.
The company has clarified in its filing that this is not a related party transaction and that promoters have no interest in the awarding entity, maintaining regulatory clarity.
Company Background
Patel Engineering Limited has been in the infrastructure space since 1949, with a strong focus on hydropower, tunnelling, and irrigation.
Over the decades, it has executed more than 85 dams and 40 hydroelectric projects, along with over 300 kilometres of tunnelling. Much of its work has been with public sector clients, both in India and overseas.
Its strength lies in handling complex engineering assignments, often in difficult terrains, which has helped it sustain relevance in a specialised segment of infrastructure.
Conclusion
The L1 position in the Lower Arun project adds another layer of visibility to Patel Engineering’s order book. It is not a headline-grabbing shift, but a steady reinforcement of its core business.
