Mumbai, July 9: Fuel prices remained largely steady across India’s metro cities and major state capitals on Thursday, even as global crude oil prices climbed to around $79 a barrel amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran. State-run oil marketing companies kept retail fuel rates steady in most cities, with only marginal revisions in a handful of locations. Petrol prices were revised in Chennai and Jaipur, while diesel rates saw minor changes in Thiruvananthapuram and Jaipur.

Oil prices climbed on Thursday after the US launched fresh strikes on Iran, deepening concerns over supply disruptions in the Middle East and extending a rally that has pushed crude to its highest levels in more than two weeks. Brent crude futures rose 1.1% to $78.9 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained the same to $74.3 a barrel. Both benchmarks had risen more than a dollar in post-settlement trading on Wednesday.

The latest gains followed President Donald Trump’s declaration that the interim agreement to end the Iran conflict was “over”, after which the US military launched fresh strikes aimed at keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to shipping. The strategic waterway, which carried around a fifth of global oil supplies before the conflict, remains under intense scrutiny after attacks on commercial vessels earlier this week disrupted tanker traffic.

Petrol prices remained largely unchanged across India’s metro cities and most state capitals on Thursday, with state-run oil marketing companies maintaining rates despite heightened volatility in global crude oil markets. Only Chennai and Jaipur witnessed marginal revisions in pump prices.

Among the four metro cities, New Delhi continued to have the lowest petrol price at ₹102.12 per litre, followed by Chennai at ₹107.77, Mumbai at ₹111.21, and Kolkata at ₹113.51. Chennai saw a marginal increase of 1 paise per litre, while prices in the other three metros were unchanged.

Across major state capitals, Hyderabad recorded the highest petrol price at ₹115.69 per litre, followed by Thiruvananthapuram at ₹115.49, Patna at ₹113.37, and Jaipur at ₹112.66. Jaipur was the only city to register a notable decline, with petrol prices falling by 53 paise per litre. Prices remained unchanged in Gurgaon, Noida, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh and Lucknow.

Retail fuel prices in India are revised daily. Although global oil prices have climbed sharply amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, domestic petrol prices have largely remained stable.

Diesel prices remained largely unchanged across India’s metro cities and most state capitals on Thursday, as state-run oil marketing companies held retail fuel rates steady despite a sharp rise in global crude oil prices triggered by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Only Thiruvananthapuram and Jaipur saw minor price revisions.

Among the four metro cities, New Delhi continued to offer the cheapest diesel at ₹95.20 per litre, followed by Mumbai at ₹97.83, Chennai at ₹99.55, and Kolkata at ₹99.82. Prices remained unchanged across all four metros compared with the previous day.

Across major state capitals, Thiruvananthapuram recorded the highest diesel price at ₹104.41 per litre, followed by Hyderabad at ₹103.82 and Bhubaneswar at ₹100.68. Diesel prices rose marginally by 1 paise in Thiruvananthapuram, while Jaipur saw a 47-paise decline to ₹97.78 per litre. Rates were unchanged in Gurgaon, Noida, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Patna.

Retail fuel prices are revised daily. Although Brent crude has climbed to $79 per barrel amid fears of supply disruptions following renewed US military action against Iran, domestic diesel prices have largely remained stable.
