Mumbai, June 17: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely stable across India’s major metro cities on Wednesday, with no changes seen in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and several other key markets. While Chennai recorded a small decline in both fuel prices, city-level revisions were mixed elsewhere, with Gurugram and Bhubaneswar seeing modest rises and Patna seeing the steepest fall in petrol and diesel rates among the cities tracked. The broad stability in fuel prices reflects the continued absence of revisions in benchmark retail rates despite fluctuations in global crude oil markets. To be sure, Brent crude futures were broadly flat near $79 a barrel today, following a steep 5.1% decline in the previous session that marked their lowest settlement since March 2. The selloff came after signs of progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations raised expectations of increased crude supplies. The prospect of additional Iranian oil entering global markets, coupled with easing geopolitical tensions, has prompted traders to reassess the risk premium that had supported prices in recent months.
For India, lower oil prices are seen as a positive macroeconomic development. Softer crude prices help ease inflationary pressures, improve the country’s trade balance and reduce input costs for sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals and oil marketing companies.
