Mumbai, October 5: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities and state capitals on Monday, with rates holding steady in most locations. Petrol was priced at ₹102.12 per litre in Delhi and ₹111.21 in Mumbai, while diesel rates stood at ₹95.20 and ₹97.83 per litre, respectively. Gurgaon and Bangalore were among the few cities to record changes in both petrol and diesel prices.

Oil prices fell on Monday as rising crude exports from the Middle East and the Group of Seven’s decision to release oil from emergency reserves eased immediate supply concerns, offsetting worries over further attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure. Brent crude futures fell 0.8% to $101.5 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude declined 1.2% to $90 a barrel.

The decline came after oil prices initially rose following claims by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group that it had launched ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Aramco sites in Riyadh and the Khurais area. The attacks raised concerns about potential disruptions to production in Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter. Saudi Arabia has not confirmed the attacks.

However, the impact of the fresh geopolitical risk was countered by signs of improving supply. G7 countries agreed last week to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel from emergency reserves and pledged to avoid energy export restrictions. At the same time, Middle Eastern crude exports rose above pre-war levels on four of the seven days in the final week of September, despite attacks on vessels travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi oil giant Aramco also unexpectedly cut its November crude prices for Asian buyers to six-year lows, with the move aimed at protecting market share as freight costs remain elevated. Meanwhile, OPEC+ has delayed a review of its 2027 production quotas amid uncertainty over future production capacity following disruptions caused by the Iran war.

Despite Monday’s decline, crude remains above $100 a barrel, reflecting persistent geopolitical risks and the threat of further disruptions to Gulf energy infrastructure. The oil market is likely to remain sensitive to developments around the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi energy facilities and the broader conflict in the Middle East.
