New Delhi, July 26, 2025 – The Ministry of Rural Development, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has launched the ‘Bima Sakhi Yojana’, a nationwide initiative aimed at advancing financial inclusion, rural women empowerment, and universal insurance coverage by 2047.

Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan declared the scheme as a transformative social security program during a press briefing, emphasizing its dual impact on economic security and women-led development.

LIC Partners with MoRD to Realize ‘Insurance for All by 2047’

As part of the scheme, the Ministry has partnered with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to operationalize the Government’s vision of “Insurance for All” by 2047. The scheme will deploy trained Self-Help Group (SHG) women as ‘Bima Sakhis’ at the Gram Panchayat level across India.

Scheme Impact & Vision

According to Shri Chouhan, the ‘Bima Sakhi Yojana’ will significantly contribute to employment creation, with a special focus on empowering rural women through entrepreneurship. By offering training and opportunities in insurance facilitation, these Bima Sakhis will become “pioneers of social change,” not just agents of insurance.

The scheme aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, creating localized jobs and ensuring trust-based insurance services at the grassroots. It also strengthens India’s resilience in disaster-prone regions by acting as a financial shield for affected rural households.

Call for Collective Action

Calling the scheme a “people’s movement,” the Minister urged all states and partner organizations to amplify its reach and ensure saturation at the village level. He concluded by saying, “This initiative will give new momentum to the economic security and holistic development of our rural mothers and sisters.”
