Mumbai, August 20: Indian equity markets saw broad-based buying on Thursday, August 20, with 14 of the 16 major sectoral indices ending higher, as easing global bond-market concerns and a rebound in risk appetite helped the Nifty and Sensex snap their recent losing streak. The gains were led by IT and financial stocks, while media and realty also outperformed.

IT Stocks Extend Recovery

The Nifty IT index gained 0.8%, extending its recovery to a second consecutive session. The index has now risen 1.5% over the past two sessions after losing nearly 4% across the preceding three sessions.

The sector benefited from improved global risk sentiment as US Treasury yields eased following measures announced by the US government to support longer-duration bonds. Lower yields can provide some relief to technology stocks, which are particularly sensitive to global interest-rate expectations. Coforge rose 3.8% while Infosys increased 0.9%. Tata Consultancy Services rose 0.4%.

Financials Gain As Bond Yields Ease

Financial stocks gained 0.7%, adding to the benchmark recovery. Lower global bond yields helped ease concerns around funding costs and supported sentiment towards rate-sensitive stocks.

Gold-loan financiers were among the notable individual movers, with Manappuram Finance rising 2.7% and Muthoot Finance gaining 3.9%, helped by the strength in gold prices.

HDB Financial Services also advanced 1.4% after a broker upgraded the stock, while the broader financial sector remained supported by renewed buying.

Media, Realty Among Top Performers

The Nifty Media index was the best-performing sectoral index, gaining 2%, while the Nifty Realty index rose 1.4%.

Among media stocks, Network18 Media & Investments rose 9% while Zee Entertainment Enterprises rose 5.7%.

The gains in realty stocks came amid an improvement in overall risk appetite.

Auto, FMCG, Pharma Also In Green

Buying extended to several other sectors. Auto, FMCG, pharma and infrastructure indices gained between 0.4% and 0.8%, while private banks also advanced.

The broad-based nature of the rally was reflected in the fact that 14 of 16 sectoral indices ended higher, indicating that the recovery was not restricted to a handful of heavyweight stocks.

Power Finance Stocks Buck Trend

Not all financial stocks participated in the recovery. Power Finance Corporation and REC fell more than 2.5% each after a broker downgraded the stocks, making them among the notable sectoral laggards.

What Drove The Sectoral Recovery?

The key trigger for Thursday’s recovery was a stabilisation in global bond markets after the US Treasury announced plans to double its purchases of longer-duration debt. The move helped ease the recent surge in bond yields and improved risk sentiment across global equities.

The sectoral rebound came after a particularly weak stretch for Indian equities, with the Nifty having fallen for seven consecutive sessions. Thursday’s gains therefore also reflected some short covering and bargain hunting.

With crude oil prices still elevated amid geopolitical tensions, however, investors are likely to remain selective. The sustainability of the sectoral recovery will depend on global yields, oil prices, foreign fund flows and broader risk appetite in the coming sessions.
