Mumbai, August 21: Indian equity benchmarks ended largely flat on Friday, August 21, as buying in metal and realty stocks was offset by selling across IT, FMCG, auto, media and pharma sectors. The Nifty gained 20.15 points, or 0.08%, to 24,252, while the Sensex rose just 3.11 points to 77,540.83.
Metals, Realty Outperform
Metal stocks were among the strongest performers in Friday’s session, benefiting from selective buying after recent weakness. The sector helped cushion pressure from several heavyweight pockets of the market. Pipe maker Welspun Corp surged 15.3% after winning a record $1.8 billion supply order, providing a major stock-specific boost to the sectoral index which rose 0.86%. Hindustan Zinc rose 3.7% after a global brokerage maintained a buy rating on the stock, saying the recent stock weakness is difficult to justify.
Realty stocks also attracted buying interest as investors looked for opportunities beyond the frontline indices. Prestige Estates Projects rose 2.9% while DLF advanced 0.3%.
IT Stocks Under Pressure
The IT sector remained under pressure, the sectoral index declining 0.5% with investors cautious amid elevated global bond yields and uncertainty over the outlook for technology spending. Infosys (down 0.8%) and HCL Technologies (1.2%) featured among the key Nifty losers, weighing on the benchmark.
Higher US Treasury yields remain a concern for IT stocks, given their sensitivity to global growth expectations and the large overseas exposure of India’s technology companies.
FMCG, Auto Stocks Decline
FMCG stocks also ended lower, with the sector among the key drags on the market. Investors remained selective in consumer-facing stocks amid concerns over the impact of elevated crude prices and inflation on consumption and input costs. Biscuit maker Britannia Industries fell the most, down 3.3%.
The auto sector was another weak pocket, the index declining 0.6%, with Maruti Suzuki among the notable Nifty losers, declining 1.8%. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles came under pressure declining 0.7% after the automaker announced a price hike of up to ₹25,000 across its car and SUV range, effective September 1. The increase will differ across models and variants.
Higher commodity and energy costs remain a concern for automobile manufacturers, while investors are also assessing demand conditions and margin prospects.
Pharma, Media Also Weak
Selling extended to pharma and media stocks, adding to the broader pressure on sectoral indices. The weakness across defensive and growth-oriented sectors pointed to a cautious market mood despite gains in metals and realty.
Broader Market Mixed
The broader market offered a more mixed picture. The Nifty Smallcap index rose 0.7%, while the mid-cap index ended flat, suggesting that investors found opportunities in select smaller stocks even as the headline indices struggled for direction.
Outlook
Sector rotation is likely to remain pronounced in the near term as investors track crude oil, global bond yields and Middle East developments. With Brent crude and global yields elevated, rate-sensitive and import-dependent sectors could remain vulnerable, while commodity-linked and stock-specific opportunities may continue to attract buying.
