Mumbai, November 4: Indian equity markets witnessed broad-based buying across sectors on Wednesday, November 4, with the Nifty Media index leading the rally, while information technology stocks remained under pressure amid concerns surrounding the US midterm election outcome and its potential implications for technology spending. Metal, Realty, Consumer Durables, Oil & Gas, Energy and FMCG stocks also advanced, helping benchmark indices extend their winning streak to a fifth consecutive session.
The Nifty 50 gained 149.75 points, or 0.63%, to close at 23,960.60, while the BSE Sensex advanced 383.55 points, or 0.50%, to settle at 77,301.40.
Media Stocks Lead Sectoral Rally
The Nifty Media index emerged as the biggest sectoral gainer, surging 5.15% amid strong buying interest in media and entertainment stocks. The rally came as investors extended their exposure beyond heavyweight frontline stocks, with broader market participation supporting the upward momentum. Music record firm Saregama India, part of RPSG group, surged 13.3% after profit jump. Zee Entertainment Enterprises rose 10% after appointing Tushar Vohra as its chief AI and transformation officer.
Metal and Realty indices were the other major outperformers, gaining around 2% each. Buying interest in metal stocks reflected the broader strength in cyclical shares, while real estate stocks also attracted investor interest amid the positive market sentiment.
Consumer Durables, FMCG And Energy Stocks Advance
Consumer Durables, Oil & Gas, Energy and FMCG indices gained, contributing to the broad-based advance across the domestic market.
The gains in FMCG and consumer-oriented stocks came amid improving investor appetite for domestic demand-linked sectors. Jeweller Titan Company and Kalyan Jewellers India rose 4.2% and 4.1% respectively ahead of Dhanteras on Friday, with investors tracking expectations of robust festive-season demand.
Energy and Oil & Gas stocks also remained in focus as crude oil prices eased in international markets, offering some relief to oil-importing economies such as India.
Brent crude futures declined around 1% to $102.50 per barrel, as investors assessed developments surrounding the US-Israeli conflict with Iran and the broader geopolitical outlook.
IT Stocks Lose; TCS, Infosys Among Top Nifty Laggards
Information technology was the only major sectoral index to close in the red, with the Nifty IT index declining 1.5%. Selling pressure in heavyweight software exporters TCS and Infosys weighed on the sector, with the two stocks falling 2.5% and 1.7%, respectively.
HCL Technologies also featured among the major Nifty 50 laggards, alongside Coal India and BSE Limited.
The weakness in IT stocks came as investors assessed the potential implications of the US midterm election outcome for technology spending and investments in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Analysts said a possible slowdown in AI spending due to shift in congressional control could benefit India’s $315 billion IT services sector, which has faced disruption from rapid developments in AI.
However, the immediate selling pressure appeared to reflect caution over the changing political landscape in the US, India’s largest market for technology services, as well as profit-booking following recent gains.
Midcap And Smallcap Stocks Outperform
The broader market outperformed the benchmark indices, with the Nifty Midcap index rising 1.6% and the Nifty Smallcap index gaining 2%.
Among individual Nifty 50 stocks, Bharat Electronics, Titan Company, Adani Enterprises, Jio Financial Services and Max Healthcare emerged as the leading gainers. On the other hand, TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Coal India and BSE Limited were among the biggest losers.
The broader market’s outperformance indicated that buying interest was not restricted to heavyweight stocks, with investors increasingly rotating funds into sectors and companies beyond the frontline indices.
Foreign Inflows And Global Cues In Focus
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) purchased Indian equities worth Rs 6,837 crore on Tuesday, according to provisional exchange data, marking their fifth buying session in the previous six trading sessions. Renewed overseas investor interest, easing crude oil prices and positive corporate earnings have supported the recent recovery in domestic equities.
Going ahead, investors will track foreign fund flows, crude oil movements, global technology spending trends and developments in US trade and fiscal policies for cues on sectoral performance.
