Mumbai, October 13: Information technology, metal, public sector bank, automobile, consumer durables and realty stocks led a broad-based recovery in Indian equities on Tuesday, with the Nifty IT index surging 5.2% after HCL Technologies reported better-than-expected September-quarter earnings. HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Shriram Finance, Tech Mahindra and Infosys were among the biggest gainers on the Nifty 50, while easing pressure on the rupee following fresh Reserve Bank of India measures also supported sentiment.
The Nifty IT index recorded its strongest single-day performance in more than 17 months, with HCL Technologies climbing 8.4% and TCS advancing 6.8%. The rally helped the Nifty 50 rise 1.60% to 22,721.95, while the Sensex gained 1.54% to close at 73,033.78.
IT Stocks Lead Sectoral Rally
HCL Technologies led the technology pack after its September-quarter net profit rose 21.2% year-on-year, beating market expectations. Improved profitability and the company’s quarterly performance encouraged buying in the stock, which had faced pressure amid concerns over artificial intelligence-led disruption and moderating growth in traditional software services.
India’s largest IT company TCS also rallied sharply, rising 6.8%. The firm had revealed its report card on Thursday. Tech Mahindra and Infosys also advanced alongside HCL Technologies as investors returned to large-cap IT stocks.
Metal, PSU Bank, Auto Stocks Advance
Buying extended beyond IT stocks, with the Nifty Metal, PSU Bank, Auto, Consumer Durables and Realty indices each gaining around 1%. Metal stocks benefited from the improvement in broader market sentiment. Hindalco Industries, Aditya Birla Group-owned firm and one of India’s biggest aluminium and copper producers, rose 2.2%.
Public sector lenders and automobile companies also attracted buying interest. State Bank of India rose 1.7% while Bajaj Auto jumped 2.8%.
Shriram Finance rose 6.3%, making it one of the strongest Nifty 50 performers, amid reports of potential acquisition interest from Japan’s Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. The stock-specific development added to the positive momentum in financial shares.
The broader market participated in the recovery, with the Nifty Midcap index gaining 1.1% and the Nifty Smallcap index rising 0.1%. However, the advance was not universal, as energy and pharmaceutical stocks were the only sectoral pockets to end in the red.
Eternal, Kotak Bank, Power Grid Among Laggards
Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Max Healthcare, Power Grid Corporation and Maruti Suzuki were among the biggest Nifty 50 laggards, bucking the broader market trend. Their declines came as investors favoured technology stocks and select cyclical sectors.
Inflation, Crude Oil Keep Investors Cautious
Despite Tuesday’s rebound, the outlook remains sensitive to inflation and geopolitical developments. India’s retail inflation accelerated to 5.54% in September, approaching the RBI’s 6% upper tolerance limit and strengthening concerns over the possibility of further monetary tightening. Elevated crude oil prices amid tensions in the Middle East also remain a concern for India’s import bill, inflation and corporate margins.
The rupee strengthened to 95.28 against the US dollar as RBI measures aimed at easing pressure on the currency supported sentiment. However, sustained gains in equities will depend on the earnings outlook, foreign investor flows and developments in crude oil markets.
