Mumbai, July 17, 2025 – Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed in the red on Thursday as selling in IT stocks and cautious investor sentiment ahead of the India-US trade talks weighed on the market.

Key Market Highlights

  • Sensex declined 375.24 points or 0.45% to close at 82,259.24
  • Nifty fell 100.60 points or 0.40% to end at 25,111.45
  • Intraday, the Sensex touched a low of 82,219.27, down 415.21 points

Investors remained on the sidelines amid weak quarterly earnings, particularly in the IT and banking sectors, as well as foreign fund outflows. The ongoing India-US trade negotiations also contributed to the cautious market mood.

IT Stocks Drag; Tech Mahindra Falls Nearly 3%

Top Loser: Tech Mahindra was the biggest drag on the Sensex. It slipped nearly 3% after the company’s Q1 numbers failed to excite investors.

Q1 Performance: The IT major posted a healthy 34% year-on-year jump in net profit, coming in at ₹1,140.6 crore.

Growth Drivers: The earnings growth was largely fueled by steady gains in its communications and financial services verticals.

Market Reaction: Despite the profit surge, the market remained cautious, suggesting investors were expecting stronger numbers or guidance.

Other Laggards: Selling pressure was also seen in heavyweights like Infosys, HCL Tech, Eternal, Larsen & Toubro, TCS, and Axis Bank, all of which ended the day in negative territory.

Selective Gains in Metal and Auto Stocks

Amid the overall decline, a few stocks bucked the trend. Tata Steel, Trent, Titan, and Tata Motors were among the top gainers, offering some cushion to the broader market.

FIIs Continue to Sell; Outflows Top ₹1,850 Crore

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers, offloading equities worth ₹1,858.15 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data.
