Chennai, August 6: Silver prices climbed for the second straight day on Thursday, extending this week’s recovery after remaining virtually unchanged through the opening days of August. The white metal gained ₹10 per gram, taking the retail rate to ₹250, while kilogram prices jumped to ₹2,50,000, their highest level in the last 10 trading sessions.

According to today’s retail rates, silver is priced at ₹250 per gram, up from ₹240 a day earlier. On a bulk basis, 1 kilogram now costs ₹2,50,000, an increase of ₹10,000 over Wednesday’s price.

The latest move follows Wednesday’s ₹5-per-gram increase, meaning silver has gained ₹15 per gram in just two sessions. After spending nearly a week trading sideways, the metal has suddenly found fresh momentum.

A Quiet Market Suddenly Springs Back to Life

Until Tuesday, Chennai’s silver market had been unusually calm.

From July 30 to August 4, prices barely moved, with silver holding steady at ₹235 per gram despite fluctuations in other precious metals. That stability ended this week.

The first sign of strength came on Wednesday, when silver edged up by ₹5 per gram. Thursday’s rally doubled those gains, lifting prices by another ₹10 per gram and taking the two-day increase to more than 6%.

For people planning to buy silver jewellery or utensils, that means purchases have become noticeably more expensive in less than 48 hours. Investors, meanwhile, will be watching whether the rally has enough support to carry prices beyond the ₹250 mark in the coming sessions.

Why Do Silver Prices Change Every Day?

Silver doesn’t move only because people buy jewellery.

The metal is widely used in solar panels, electric vehicles, electronics, medical equipment and industrial manufacturing, making demand from factories just as important as demand from investors. Add to that global silver prices, currency movements, import costs and geopolitical developments, and daily price changes become almost inevitable.

This mix of investment and industrial demand is also why silver often experiences bigger and faster swings than gold.

Conclusion

Silver prices in Chennai extended their winning streak on Thursday, with the metal climbing to ₹250 per gram and ₹2,50,000 per kilogram. The sharp rise has brought an end to nearly a week of stagnant prices and pushed silver to its highest level in the past 10 days. Whether the rally gathers further pace or cools off will largely depend on global precious metal markets and industrial demand in the days ahead.
