New Delhi, Aug 25: Silver prices in India held steady at the national level on Tuesday morning, a day after Monday’s sharp rally. Today’s national rate for silver stands at ₹2,600 per 10 grams, ₹26,000 per 100 grams, and ₹2,60,000 per kilogram — unchanged from Monday’s national rate. On a per-gram basis, that works out to ₹260, flat compared with Monday.
While the national rate held flat, the picture wasn’t uniform across the country. Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala — which had commanded a wider premium on Monday — saw their 10-gram rate ease by ₹100, slipping from ₹2,750 to ₹2,650, even as the remaining seven cities held steady at Monday’s level of ₹2,600 per 10 grams. The move marks a partial unwinding of Monday’s sharp ₹149 per 10 grams gain in the three premium cities, even as the broader national rate stayed put.
Silver price in India is determined largely by international prices, which move in either direction depending on global industrial demand, investment flows and mining supply. Currency movement also plays a part: if the rupee weakens against the dollar while international silver prices hold firm, the metal tends to become costlier in India. Tuesday’s flat national move suggests global prices and the rupee both held roughly steady overnight, even as local premiums in a handful of cities corrected lower.
Dealers said Tuesday’s steady national reading, following Monday’s sharp rise, points to silver consolidating after two strong sessions rather than reversing its broader uptrend. The narrowing premium in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala was attributed to local dealers realigning rates closer to the national average after Monday’s outsized move in those markets. Traders said silver’s near-term direction will likely hinge on fresh cues from the US Federal Reserve and any further escalation in US-Iran tensions, alongside industrial demand from electronics and solar-panel manufacturers.
Market participants added that silver continues to draw interest from retail investors looking for a lower-cost alternative to gold, with Tuesday’s steadier pricing offering a more settled backdrop after Monday’s sharp climb. On a per-kilogram basis, Tuesday’s rates translate to ₹2,65,000 in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala, down from ₹2,75,000 on Monday, while the remaining seven cities remain unchanged at ₹2,60,000 per kilogram. Retail buyers are reminded that these are indicative bullion rates, and actual prices at silverware and jewellery counters will typically include additional making charges and applicable GST.
Market watchers said Tuesday’s flat national reading, coupled with a pullback in the three premium cities, suggests silver is consolidating after two sessions of sharp gains rather than reversing its broader uptrend. With silver’s industrial demand base adding an extra layer of price sensitivity compared with gold, dealers expect the white metal to remain choppy in the sessions ahead, and advised buyers with near-term purchase plans to track city-wise rates closely rather than rely on the national average alone.
Historically, silver has traded at a small fraction of gold’s price per gram, and Tuesday’s flat move did little to change that broad relationship. Analysts tracking the gold-silver ratio said the pause in silver, even as gold posted a modest gain of its own on Tuesday, suggests markets are digesting last week’s synchronised rally rather than reacting to any silver-specific supply disruption or demand shock. That said, silver’s added industrial-use component means it can occasionally decouple from gold during periods when manufacturing or green-energy demand shifts independently of investment sentiment.
