Mumbai, July 10: After crashing by Rs 99 on Thursday, silver prices rebounded by Rs 50 per 10 gram on Friday to trade at Rs 2400 (Rs 240 per gram or Rs 2,40,000 per kg). The white metal had rallied hard over the first two trading sessions of the week before running out of steam mid-week and declining further on Thursday. Despite Friday’s gains, silver prices have further to go just to get back to levels seen earlier in the week, let alone recover its weekly losses.
Prices of silver, like those of gold, have been primarily following international trends in recent times. But while the day-to-day price action of the yellow metal also factors in elements like farmer’s purchases tied to seasonal demand and imports from unofficial channels, sentiment around industrial demand from electronics and solar panel manufacturers, dollar moves and broader risk appetite.

Silver, on the other hand, typically factors in demand from these sectors too, but unlike gold tends to see that offtake continue even during times of investment-driven volatility in prices, which is why the metal has managed to stage a comeback today.
At the city level, rates across board continue to trade well off highs from earlier in the week. Premium markets Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala are quoting Rs 2450 per 10 grams on Friday, down Rs 149 from Monday’s high of Rs 2599. The rest of the country, including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad are quoting Rs 2400 per 10 grams, down Rs 99 from Monday’s levels of Rs 2499.
Spread evenly across both tiers, the similar but percentage-wise higher declines on the cheaper patch underscores how this week’s pullback – while sharp – has been broadly healthy across markets and not skewed heavily against any one city, which saw deeper declines than the rest. Hyundai and Kerala saw silver prices trade briefly even softer than Chennai on Wednesday before the top tier’s three centres traded largely in-step with each other ever since.

Gold prices, meanwhile, also rose across the board on Friday.
National prices for 24 karat gold are quoted at Rs 1,44,450 per 10 grams today, up Rs 1330 from Thursday’s close of Rs 1,43,120. Prices for 22 karat gold edged up by Rs 1220 to Rs 1,32,410 per 10 grams from Rs 1,31,190 and those for 18 karat gold gained Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,08,340 per 10 grams from Rs 1,07,340. Investors sold gold on Thursday after it rallied hard last week.
Market players attributed today’s gains in gold and silver to some fresh safe-haven buying and a modest weakening in the dollar following some aggressive profit booking earlier in the week. “This trend may not continue for long and traders should expect volatility in both metals going ahead as prices react to news-flow,” said another. “Trump, Brexit and US-China trade talks are likely to dominate sentiment,” he added.
However, analysts say that over the medium-term both gold and silver are supported by the factors mentioned above, led by continuing industrial consumption and significant central bank buying into both metals, as well as robust retail demand here at home as India’s wedding season continues into July. “In Mumbai at least, we have continued to see good demand from regular visitors to our stores throughout this price action. People continue to see gold and silver as a good way to save for the festive season during the later part of the year,” said a Mumbai-based jeweller.
