Mumbai, June 29: Silver gained ground on Monday, clawing back a small portion of last week’s hefty losses when fears of war in the Middle East evaporated and prices plunged as Iran-US tensions eased. The national price for 10 grams of silver today is ₹2,399 or ₹239.90 per gram and ₹2,39,900 per kilogram, up ₹49 per 10 grams from Thursday’s national price of ₹2,350.

India’s domestic silver prices are linked to the international spot price, which typically tracks US industrial demand and dollar movements, as well as the risk-on/risk-off sentiment in global markets.

Monday’s recovery comes after global markets stabilized following last week’s intense selling pressure precipitated by the US and Iran situation, triggering buyers to return to markets they saw as attractively-priced following the four-session decline that saw the national price drop from ₹2,499 on Tuesday June 23 to ₹2,350 on Thursday June 25.

Regional prices for silver across India also strengthened on Monday after posting some sharp declines last week that briefly inverted the typical premium seen in southern India compared to prices in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad.

Rates for 10 grams of silver in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad were all ₹2,399 on Monday, ₹49 higher than the previous regional rates of ₹2,350 from Thursday. The jump in silver rates was less pronounced in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala where prices rose ₹149 per 10 grams to ₹2,449 — retracing the entirety of Thursday’s drop when rates plunged ₹199 per 10 gm to ₹2,300.

These levels restored the southern premium to previous levels where Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala see prices that are typically around ₹50 higher than rates in the mainstream national market. These three cities in South India had seen some of the strongest declines on Thursday, which were likely triggered by selling pressure from local buyers who tend to dominate these markets, before those buyers began returning on Monday once prices retreated.

Gold Prices on Monday

Gold prices recovered on Monday as well. The national rate for 10 grams of 24 karat gold (99.9% purity) was ₹1,43,940 – up ₹3,810 from Thursday’s national close of ₹1,40,130 that saw the biggest daily drop of the four-day decline. The 22 karat rate for 10 grams of gold rose ₹3,490 to ₹1,31,940, while 18 karat prices rebounded ₹2,850 to ₹1,07,950. We also continue to see Chennai leading the price recovery among major cities across India. Here, 10 grams of 24 karat gold sold for ₹1,45,850 on Monday.
