Mumbai, Aug 12: Silver prices started the day on a slightly firmer note in India, with the white metal moving up by ₹0.10 per gram. The latest silver rate stands at ₹255.10 per gram, compared with ₹255 on the previous day.

For buyers looking at larger quantities, the current rate works out to ₹2,551 for 10 grams, ₹25,510 for 100 grams and ₹2,55,100 for one kilogram. On a kilogram basis, silver is up ₹100 from the previous rate of ₹2,55,000.

The move itself is modest, so there has been no major jump in the retail cost of silver overnight. Still, for people buying in bulk, even a small change in the per-gram price can add up.

  • 10 grams: ₹2,551
  • 100 grams: ₹25,510

Silver Jewellery or Investment Silver? The Final Price Can Differ

This is where the headline silver rate can be a little misleading.

If you’re buying a silver bar or coin, the final price may include taxes and a seller’s premium. If you’re buying jewellery or an item made from silver, making charges can add another layer to the bill.

For example, the calculator on the rate page uses a 10-gram purchase with a 12% making charge and 3% GST. At today’s rate, the base silver value is ₹2,551. The assumed making charge comes to ₹306 and GST to ₹86, taking the indicative total to around ₹2,943.

That ₹2,943 figure is only an example based on those assumptions. Actual charges depend on the product and seller.

Why Does Silver Price Change?

Silver has a slightly different price story from gold because it is both a precious metal and an industrial commodity.

It is used in areas such as electronics, solar-related applications and other industrial processes. At the same time, investors and consumers buy silver through bars, coins, jewellery and other physical products.

Because of this mix of demand, international silver prices, currency movements, industrial activity and investor sentiment can all influence the domestic rate.

Local pricing can also vary because of transportation, taxes, dealer margins and local market conditions.

Silver Price Trend: A Small Move Today

Today’s move is more of a minor uptick than a sharp rally.

The rate has increased from ₹255 to ₹255.10 per gram. On a 10-gram purchase, that is just a ₹1 difference. At 100 grams, the difference is ₹10, while at 1 kg it becomes ₹100.

So, for a regular retail buyer, today’s change is unlikely to materially alter the cost of a small purchase. For someone buying silver in larger quantities, the cumulative impact becomes more noticeable.

Should Buyers Focus Only on Today’s Rate?

The daily rate is useful for knowing where the market stands, but it doesn’t tell you the final price you’ll actually pay. Before buying physical silver, it makes sense to ask the seller for a complete breakup covering the metal value, GST, making charges and any other applicable costs.

This is especially important for jewellery, where making charges can vary significantly depending on the design and workmanship.

For investment-oriented buyers, comparing the premium over the prevailing silver rate can also be more useful than simply looking at the headline price.
