Mumbai, June 11: Silver prices in India remained unchanged on Thursday, with the national rate holding steady at Rs 250 per gram — or Rs 2,500 per 10 grams and Rs 2,50,000 per kilogram — flat from Wednesday’s rate of Rs 2,500 per 10 grams. While the absence of a fresh decline may offer temporary relief to investors tracking the metal, the flat session does little to reverse the steep cumulative loss of Rs 250 per 10 grams that silver has recorded since Friday’s rate of Rs 2,750, making this the fourth consecutive session in which the metal has either fallen or failed to recover.

The stagnation at Rs 2,500 reflects a market caught between two competing forces. On one side, an escalating military exchange between the United States and Iran — which saw fresh overnight US strikes on Iranian targets and Iran’s declaration of the Strait of Hormuz as closed — would ordinarily be expected to lift precious metals as investors seek protection from geopolitical risk.

On the other, silver’s significant industrial demand component, which accounts for more than half of global consumption, continues to act as a drag in an environment of slowing global manufacturing activity. The metal’s failure to rally even as crude oil surged past $95 a barrel on Thursday underscores the extent to which silver is, at this juncture, tracking industrial sentiment more closely than safe-haven flows.

Across India’s major cities, Thursday’s rates were uniformly unchanged from Wednesday, preserving the two-tier pricing structure that has characterised domestic silver markets in recent sessions. In Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad, silver continues to trade at Rs 2,500 per 10 grams — unchanged from Wednesday and Rs 250 lower than Friday’s Rs 2,750 in these markets.

The southern cities of Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala, which carry a consistent structural premium of Rs 100 per 10 grams on account of stronger regional jewellery fabrication demand, are similarly flat at Rs 2,600 per 10 grams on Thursday, compared with Rs 2,600 on Wednesday and Rs 2,850 on Friday. The unchanged rates across all ten cities confirm that Thursday’s session produced no new directional catalyst — neither the geopolitical escalation nor any domestic demand signal was sufficient to move prices in either direction from Wednesday’s already-depressed levels.

Gold Prices

Gold prices in India fell sharply on Thursday, recording one of the steepest single-session declines in recent weeks — a move that defied conventional wisdom, as bullion, long regarded as the ultimate safe haven in times of geopolitical stress, failed to attract the flight-to-safety buying that an escalating exchange of strikes between the United States and Iran would typically be expected to trigger. The national price of 24-karat gold (99.9% purity) plunged to Rs 1,48,850 per 10 grams, shedding Rs 4,320 from Wednesday’s Rs 1,53,170, while the 22-karat rate (91.6% purity) fell to Rs 1,36,440 per 10 grams, down Rs 3,970 from Wednesday’s Rs 1,40,410. The 18-karat price (75% purity) eased to Rs 1,11,630 per 10 grams, declining Rs 3,250 from Wednesday’s Rs 1,14,880, and on a per-gram basis, 24K gold now stands at Rs 14,885, 22K at Rs 13,644 and 18K at Rs 11,163.
