Mumbai, October 15: Indian equity benchmarks staged a sharp recovery on Thursday, with the Sensex surging 1,533.72 points and the Nifty 50 closing near the 23,000 mark, led by buying in information technology, automobile, infrastructure, oil and gas, and private banking stocks. Strong quarterly earnings from select companies and gains in heavyweight shares supported the rally, even as hotter-than-expected US inflation revived concerns over further interest rate hikes and kept global investor sentiment fragile.

At close, the BSE Sensex jumped 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to settle at 74,315.61, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to end at 22,997.35. The equity benchmarks clocked their biggest single-day gain in four months. However, market breadth remained negative, with 2,606 shares declining against 1,592 advancing, while 162 shares remained unchanged.

IT, Auto, Private Banks Lead Rally

Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, HCL Technologies and Reliance Industries were among the biggest gainers on the Nifty 50, providing strong support to the benchmarks. On the other hand, Nestle India, Trent, Adani Enterprises, Shriram Finance and Larsen & Toubro featured among the major laggards.

On the sectoral front, automobile, information technology, infrastructure, oil and gas, private banking and realty stocks advanced between 1% and 1.8%. In contrast, the Nifty Media and PSU Bank indices declined by more than 1% each.

IT stocks attracted buying interest following HCL Technologies’ better-than-expected September-quarter earnings earlier this week, which lifted sentiment towards the sector. Investors also tracked upcoming results from Wipro and other companies for clues on technology spending, deal conversions, margins and demand conditions.

US Inflation, Fed Rate-Hike Concerns

The domestic rally came likely because foreign buying came rushing back amid a challenging backdrop abroad. US consumer price inflation accelerated more than expected in September, strengthening expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates again this year. The data triggered a sell-off on Wall Street, particularly in technology and artificial intelligence-linked stocks, while Asian equities suffered sharp losses on Thursday.

The correction in global technology stocks probably prompted foreign investors to reassess valuations and potentially redirect some investment towards India. For Indian equities, the sustainability of any such shift will depend on global risk appetite, domestic earnings and foreign fund flows.

Crude Oil, Rupee Remain Key Variables

Crude oil prices remained another important factor for domestic markets. Brent crude fell 1.5% to $104.40 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude declined 1.2% to $93.90, as investors weighed supply risks linked to Middle East tensions against the possibility of improved oil flows.

Despite the decline, Brent remained above $100 a barrel, keeping concerns over India’s import bill, inflation and the rupee in focus. Sustained high crude prices could also squeeze margins for oil-sensitive companies and complicate the domestic inflation outlook.

Broader Markets Underperform

Despite the sharp gains in benchmark indices, broader markets remained under pressure. The Nifty Midcap index declined 0.5%, while the Nifty Smallcap index fell 1.3%, suggesting that buying interest was concentrated in select heavyweight stocks.

Among individual stocks, IDBI Bank declined 7.7% after the government approved a Rs 52,878-crore stake sale to Fairfax Financial Holdings. CEAT also came under pressure falling 4% after reporting a decline in September-quarter profit amid higher rubber costs. Meanwhile, telecom stock Bharti Airtel rose 3.3% and Reliance Industries rose 3.4% after the refining to telecom giant’s arm Jio Platforms proposed India’s largest IPO, which could provide a valuation benchmark for the sector.

Going forward, investors will monitor corporate earnings, foreign investor activity, crude oil prices, the rupee and signals from the Federal Reserve. Thursday’s rally provided a strong rebound for benchmark indices, but weakness in mid- and small-cap stocks and uncertainty over global interest rates suggest that a sustained, broad-based recovery remains to be established.
