Hansalpur, Gujarat | August 26, 2025 : Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor Corporation announced that it plans to invest ₹70,000 crore in India. The investment will be made over the next five to six years, making it one of Suzuki’s largest commitments to the country. The announcement came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off exports of Maruti Suzuki’s first electric SUV, the e-VITARA, to global markets and inaugurated lithium-ion battery cell production at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility.
Strengthening India Operations
Suzuki has already invested over ₹1 lakh crore in India, which has created more than 11 lakh direct jobs across its value chain. Now, furthering this arrangement with the new investment, the company has shown optimism regarding the same. Reflecting the same, Suzuki’s Representative Director and President, Toshihiro Suzuki, spoke at the event, saying “Suzuki will invest over ₹70,000 crore in India over the next 5 to 6 years. We remain committed to supporting India’s vision for sustainable green mobility and contributing to Viksit Bharat.” This highlighted the company’s long-standing association with India.
First EV Exports from Gujarat
The first batch of e-VITARA is set to be exported. They are manufactured exclusively at Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG), which is a key milestone for the automaker. The first batch of exports will be shipped from Pipavav Port to over 100 countries. This will include major European markets such as the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Sweden, along with Japan.
Future Prospect
Looking ahead, the company wants the Gujarat facility to be one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturing hubs, with a planned capacity of 10 lakh units annually. Expanding on the notion, Suzuki noted, “We chose this facility to manufacture the e VITARA, our first battery electric vehicle (BEV), and make it a global production hub.”
Battery Cell Production in India
In addition to the above, Suzuki also commenced production of India’s first lithium-ion battery and cell with electrode-level localisation at the Toshiba Denso Suzuki plant in Gujarat. These cells will be used in the company’s strong hybrid vehicles. With only raw materials and select semiconductor parts imported from Japan, the move signals a major step toward Atmanirbhar Bharat in clean mobility.
