Mumbai, July 3: The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will remain completely closed on Friday, July 3 in observance of Independence Day, as the July 4 holiday falls on a Saturday this year. Trading will resume on Monday, July 6, at the regular opening bell of 9:30 AM Eastern Time. The bond market will also be closed on 3 July and will additionally close early at 2:00 PM ET on Thursday, 2 July.
Independence Day 2026 Observed on July 3 as Holiday Falls on Saturday
When a market holiday falls on a weekend, US exchanges typically observe it on the nearest Friday or Monday. Since July 4, 2026, is a Saturday, the federal government and financial markets have shifted the observance to Friday, July 3.
This means Wall Street will see a three-day weekend from Friday through Sunday, with normal trading hours resuming on Monday. Market participants should note that trading volumes typically thin out ahead of long weekends, potentially contributing to sharper price movements during abbreviated sessions.
Ten Full-Day Closures Scheduled for NYSE and Nasdaq in 2026
Beyond the Independence Day observance, US stock exchanges close for a total of 10 full trading holidays. The complete list of full-day closures for 2026 includes
| Holiday | Date (2026) | Day |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January 2026 | Thursday |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | 19 January 2026 | Monday |
| Presidents’ Day | 16 February 2026 | Monday |
| Good Friday | 3 April 2026 | Friday |
| Memorial Day | 25 May 2026 | Monday |
| Juneteenth National Independence Day | 19 June 2026 | Friday |
| Independence Day (Observed) | 3 July 2026 | Friday |
| Labor Day | 7 September 2026 | Monday |
| Thanksgiving Day | 26 November 2026 | Thursday |
| Christmas Day | 25 December 2026 | Friday |
Most of these closures align with major federal holidays, though Good Friday is a notable exception, markets close while many banks remain open.
Two Early Closing Sessions at 1:00 PM ET on 27 November and 24 December
In addition to full closures, the NYSE and Nasdaq will halt trading early at 1:00 PM Eastern Time on two occasions: the day after Thanksgiving (27 November) and Christmas Eve (24 December).
These shortened sessions typically witness lower liquidity and reduced market depth, yet price movements can remain sharp due to thinner participation. Regular trading hours on all other business days run from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET.
Bond Markets Observe Additional Closures on Columbus Day and Veterans Day
While stock exchanges follow the 10-holiday schedule, bond markets observe two additional full closures, on Columbus Day (12 October) and Veterans Day (11 November), days when the NYSE and Nasdaq remain open for regular trading. This distinction is important for fixed-income investors tracking Treasury and corporate bond markets.
Market participants should align trading calendars with the confirmed holiday schedule to avoid settlement delays and unexpected liquidity gaps. The 3 July closure creates a long weekend; investors should plan trades accordingly. Reduced participation during early closures on 27 November and 24 December may amplify intraday price swings. Regular monitoring of exchange-specific announcements remains essential as holiday schedules are subject to change.
