On Monday morning, 9th June, 2025, the MSC IRINA, the world’s largest container ship by capacity, made her historic premiere at the Vizhinjam International Seaport. This was a huge stride forward for India’s marine industry. The arrival of the Ultra-Large Container Vessel (ULCV) is a big deal because it shows how important the new deepwater port is strategically and how India is becoming more important in global trade and logistics.

Grand Arrival at South Asia’s Deepwater Gateway

The MSC IRINA arrived at Vizhinjam Port at 8:00 AM, greeted with a ceremonial water salute. The vessel is expected to remain docked until Tuesday, further solidifying Vizhinjam’s credentials as a destination for the world’s largest ships.

This milestone comes shortly after the port was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2, signifying the operational readiness of one of India’s most strategically positioned seaports.

A New Era in Maritime Logistics

The MSC IRINA has a huge carrying capacity of 24,346 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). This shows how global trade is rising and how important India is becoming in global shipping networks. The ship is 399.9 meters long and 61.3 meters wide, which is about four times the length of a FIFA football field.

The ship was launched in March 2023 and started its first trip in April. It is meant to be used on busy commerce routes between Asia and Europe. It can stack containers up to 26 levels high, which is 150 TEUs more than the previous record-holder, OOCL Spain.

Strategic Advantage for India

In a social media post, Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, said,

“Proud to welcome MSC Irina, the world’s largest container ship, to our Vizhinjam port. This marks the vessel’s maiden visit to the South Asian shores, making it a milestone not just for Vizhinjam but for India’s emergence as a key player in global transshipment. A bold vision now in motion.”

Vizhinjam’s ability to handle such mega vessels demonstrates its evolving role as a transshipment hub. This has positioned it among the elite ports capable of managing next-generation container ships.

Focus on Sustainability and Innovation

The MSC IRINA sets the standard for sustainable shipping – with energy-saving technologies that reduce carbon emissions by up to 4%. Enabling sustainability throughout the world while keeping operations running smoothly.

Before this, other Icon-class ships including MSC Türkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini had docked here. Strengthening Vizhinjam’s status as one of the best ports in the world.

Conclusion

The arrival of MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam is a redefining moment for India’s maritime journey. It reflects not only the port’s state-of-the-art capabilities but also the country’s rising stature in global trade and commitment to sustainable logistics.
