Mumbai: Mukesh Ambani’s family has held on to its place as India’s richest business family despite an 8.5 per cent drop in fortunes to Rs 25.8 lakh crore in 2026, a report said on Tuesday.

The Gautam Adani family from Ahmedabad has emerged as the richest among the first generation with a wealth of Rs 19.6 lakh crore, as per the ‘2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India most valuable family businesses list’.

Telecom company Airtel’s promoter Sunil Bharti Mittal comes third with a fortune of Rs 12.1 lakh crore which also makes him the second among first-generation families, and is followed by Kumar Mangalam Birla with a fortune of Rs 8.14 lakh crore.

“India’s most valuable family businesses are now worth USD 1.46 trillion, or INR 138 lakh crore. To put that in perspective, if this List were a country, it would rank as the world’s 18th-largest economy by GDP, larger than the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Poland,” Hurun India’s founder and chief researcher Anas Rahman Junaid said.

As per the list, India’s top 300 family businesses added Rs 4,076 crore of value every day in the last two years.

The Ahuja family of Shahi Exports recorded the highest three-year value growth on the list, with the fortunes increasing by 352 per cent to Rs 37,500 crore, while Garware Hi-Tech Films’ Shashikant Bhalchandra Garware family had the sharpest rank gain by climbing 61 places in the three years on the back of a 300 per cent jump in fortunes to Rs 15,600 crore.

The Jindal family created the most value in absolute terms over three years, adding Rs 3.3 lakh crore to reach Rs 8.02 lakh crore, which is a rise of 70 per cent in the fortunes, the list said.
