Mumbai, November 2: Crude oil prices declined sharply on Monday as investors weighed the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough in efforts to end the US-Israeli war on Iran. Continued discussions between Iranian and Qatari officials, aimed at finding a resolution to the conflict, eased some immediate concerns over supply disruptions from the Middle East. Brent crude futures fell 2.9% to $110.2 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 3% to $101 per barrel.

The retreat followed a strong rally in oil prices last week, with Brent settling at its highest level in six months at the end of October. The market has remained particularly sensitive to developments in the Middle East, with the conflict threatening energy infrastructure, shipping routes and the movement of crude from one of the world’s most important oil-producing regions.

The latest decline in crude prices came as Iranian and Qatari officials continued discussions for a third consecutive day, seeking to facilitate an agreement to end the US-Israeli war on Iran. The diplomatic engagement has raised hopes that tensions could ease and the risk of further disruptions to global energy supplies may diminish.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Sunday that the ongoing discussions were intended to continue consultations with Qatari mediators. He also indicated that Tehran remained prepared for both defence and diplomacy, suggesting that while diplomatic channels remained open, the possibility of further escalation had not been ruled out.

According to market analysts, the decline also reflected a correction following last week’s sharp gains. Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, said hopes of diplomatic progress, combined with the absence of any significant military escalation over the weekend, had taken some immediate pressure off crude prices.

However, the outlook remains uncertain. Waterer cautioned that rhetoric surrounding Iran could intensify following Tuesday’s US midterm elections, potentially pushing Brent crude towards $120 per barrel.

Strait Of Hormuz Disruptions Keep Supply Concerns Alive

Despite the diplomatic developments, concerns over the security of international oil shipments remain a significant source of uncertainty for the energy market. Attacks on oil tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz have raised concerns over the movement of crude and driven up global energy and shipping costs.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passage for international oil trade, connecting major Gulf producers with global markets. Any prolonged disruption to shipping through the waterway could restrict supplies and increase transportation costs, potentially offsetting the impact of lower crude prices.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia increased its crude exports in October compared with September, despite attacks by Iran-aligned Yemeni Houthi forces on its energy infrastructure. Two of the three ship-tracking companies cited in the Reuters report confirmed the increase, indicating that exports from the kingdom had remained resilient despite regional security challenges.

Nevertheless, the possibility of further attacks on energy infrastructure and commercial shipping continues to keep traders cautious about the near-term supply outlook.

OPEC+ Keeps December Production Targets Unchanged

Separately, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, collectively known as OPEC+, decided on Sunday to maintain production targets at existing levels for December.

The decision was broadly in line with market expectations, with the producer group indicating that further adjustments to its production policy were unlikely before next year. The group continues to contend with export disruptions associated with the Iran conflict, adding another layer of uncertainty to the global oil supply outlook.

The decision to maintain output targets also comes against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical risks and volatile energy prices. Any prolonged disruption to exports from the Middle East could complicate the group’s production decisions in the coming months.

What Falling Crude Oil Prices Mean For India

The decline in international crude prices could provide some relief to India, which relies heavily on imports to meet its domestic petroleum requirements. Elevated crude prices increase the country’s import bill, put pressure on the rupee and complicate the government’s efforts to manage inflation.

A sustained decline in Brent crude could ease input costs for oil marketing companies, airlines, paint manufacturers, tyre companies and other businesses that depend on petroleum products. Lower energy costs could also help moderate transportation and logistics expenses across industries.

For the broader economy, cheaper crude could reduce imported inflationary pressures and provide greater room for monetary policy flexibility, particularly if the decline persists over an extended period.

However, the latest correction does not necessarily signal a lasting reversal in the oil market. With the US-Iran conflict unresolved, attacks on tankers continuing to threaten shipping routes and the possibility of further escalation remaining open, crude prices could remain volatile.

For India, the trajectory of oil prices will therefore depend not only on diplomatic progress between Tehran and Washington but also on the security of energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and the ability of major producers to maintain supplies.
