Mumbai, November 3: The Sensex and the Nifty 50 opened higher on Tuesday and extended Monday’s strong rally, with the BSE Sensex at 76,397.72 at 9.29 am, up 704.94 points or 0.93 per cent. The NSE Nifty 50 stood at 23,617.65 at 9.30 am, higher by 176.85 points or 0.75 per cent. Both benchmarks are trading above Monday’s close, which was a near two-month high for the Sensex, and the Nifty is back above the 23,600 mark.
On Monday, the Sensex rose 1.66 per cent and the Nifty gained 1.68 per cent. Over the two sessions, the Sensex has added 1,938.19 points, or 2.60 per cent, from Friday’s close of 74,459.53, and the Nifty 564.55 points, or 2.45 per cent, from 23,053.10. Monday’s move was led by Reliance Industries, which surged 11.6 per cent on September-quarter earnings.
Crude oil is the first support. Brent was at $104.70 a barrel, about 11.3 per cent below the six-month high of $118 touched on Friday. Lower prices ease concerns over India’s import bill, inflation and external balances. WTI crude was at $96.57, up 0.11 per cent, so the pullback from Friday’s peak has so far held.
Foreign money is the second. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought Indian equities worth about Rs 3,115 crore on Monday. Breadth backed the move, with 2,668 shares advancing against 1,469 declining and 162 unchanged on the NSE. The Nifty Midcap index gained 1 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap index 0.7 per cent on Monday, so the rally was not confined to large caps.
The third is the calendar. The US votes in the midterm elections today, and the results will arrive after Indian trading hours. Wall Street ended mixed on Monday, with the Nasdaq down 1.07 per cent, the S&P 500 down 0.51 per cent and the Dow up 0.41 per cent. The VIX, Wall Street’s fear gauge, rose 8.91 per cent to 21.15.
Asia offers no strong cue. The Hang Seng gained 0.6 per cent while the Kospi fell 2.78 per cent. India VIX rose 2.01 per cent to 15.81, indicating that traders are not expecting a sharp move today. The Nikkei fell 0.33 per cent and Shanghai lost 0.56 per cent, so no drastic development is visible in the region this morning.

Iran War
The US-Israeli war on Iran, which began in late February, saw another round of diplomacy on Monday, when Iranian and Qatari officials held a third consecutive day of talks aimed at an agreement to end it. The conflict has opened a front in Yemen, where the Iran-aligned Houthis have stepped up attacks on Saudi Arabia. According to Reuters, contacts between Iran and the United States to end their eight-month war are continuing, Tehran said on Monday, after days of Iranian talks with Qatari mediators ended with altered proposals but no breakthrough. “Consultations through mediators are very intensive. We have presented our conditions and proposals and everything depends on the political rationality of Washington,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in comments carried by state media outlet IRNA.
