Mumbai, 4 September 2025: Defence benchmarks were under pressure today, with the Nifty India Defence index dropping close to 2% to close at 7,544.95 – this was its third consecutive session of declines as sector breadth was extremely weak. While the remainder of the market rode the wave of comprehensive GST reforms, defence stocks remained on the periphery.
Positive Sentiment Elsewhere, but Defence in Sidelines as Nifty India Defence Drops 1.98%
The sharp defence correction in counters marks a marked contrast to the GST Council makeover-led market boom, merging tax slabs of four to two at 5% and 18%, with effect from September 22. The makeover, which was intended to give a push to consumption in sectors such as consumer goods, autos, and property, did not bring any direct plus to defence stocks. Instead, defensive leaders like HAL, BEL, BDL, and Mazagon Dock continued to slide, extending month-long corrections despite GST positivity in other areas.
Defensive Sentiment Remains Muted Despite Broader Market Gains Ahead of Festival Season
Investors appear to be betting on the cyclical sectors poised to benefit directly from consumption-led growth, leaving defence in the lurch. Even while GST reforms drove gains in autos and consumer staples, defensive stocks remained in corrective mode, reflecting the sector’s historical vulnerability to macro and demand-related triggers. Simultaneously, broader markets rose: Nifty 50 hit higher levels ahead of the festival season, thanks to rate cuts and tax reforms.
