Mumbai, Oct 19: Indian exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking gold, silver, information technology and defence fell together on Monday, with no silver, IT or defence fund in positive territory. Bank ETFs tracking the Nifty Bank index also slipped, although the eight PSU bank ETFs on the exchange moved sharply higher, gaining between 2.21 and 3.38 per cent. Liquid ETFs, as usual, barely moved. The broader market was soft too, with NiftyBeES (NIFTYBEES) down 1.01 per cent at Rs 261.24.
Precious metals showed the same pattern, with silver by far the weaker of the two. All 19 silver ETFs and 25 of the 26 gold ETFs were lower. The lone exception, UNIONGOLD, rose 0.35 per cent to Rs 142.55 on a traded value of just Rs 0.03 crore.
Silver ETFs fall harder than gold
SilverBeES (SILVERBEES), the most traded silver ETF at Rs 186.69 crore, slipped 1.26 per cent to Rs 197.42. HDFC Silver ETF (HDFCSILVER) lost 1.40 per cent to Rs 197.16, the sharpest fall among the four most traded names, while Tata Silver ETF (TATSILV) eased 1.28 per cent to Rs 20.08 and SilverIETF fell 1.16 per cent to Rs 206.13. The move extends a heavy month. SilverBeES is down 10.77 per cent over 30 days and trades about 45 per cent below its 52-week high of Rs 360, though it remains up 24.5 per cent over one year.
Gold ETFs lose ground more gently
GoldBeES (GOLDBEES), the largest gold ETF by traded value at Rs 179.42 crore, lost 0.31 per cent to Rs 119.83. Tata Gold ETF (TATAGOLD) eased 0.28 per cent to Rs 14.09, GoldIETF slipped 0.32 per cent to Rs 124.20, SETFGOLD fell 0.35 per cent to Rs 123.54, and HDFC Gold ETF (HDFCGOLD) lost 0.31 per cent to Rs 123.85. GoldBeES is down 4.97 per cent over 30 days and about 19 per cent below its 52-week high of Rs 148.14, but it is still up 11.18 per cent over one year.
Bank ETFs split into two camps
All 14 ETFs tracking the Nifty Bank index fell. BankBeES (BANKBEES), the largest at Rs 32.98 crore traded, lost 0.46 per cent to Rs 576.03, BankIETF (BANKIETF) eased 0.33 per cent to Rs 57.14 and SETFNIFBK fell 0.42 per cent to Rs 571.60. PSU bank funds went the other way. PSUBNKBEES gained 2.37 per cent to Rs 92.46 on Rs 26.53 crore of traded value, PSUBANK rose 2.54 per cent to Rs 82.82, and HDFCPSUBK added 2.73 per cent to Rs 83.94. DSP’s PSUBANKADD led the group, up 3.38 per cent at Rs 84.01. The rally follows a soft month, with PSUBNKBEES still down 2.51 per cent over 30 days.
IT ETFs fall after a strong month
All nine IT ETFs were lower. ITBeES (ITBEES), the most traded at Rs 57.28 crore, lost 1.63 per cent to Rs 34.93, and ITIETF eased 1.44 per cent to Rs 34.98. ITADD fell the most at 1.64 per cent, while ITAxis (ITAXIS) was the mildest at 1.26 per cent. The decline follows a strong run, with ITBeES up 11.18 per cent over 30 days. It is still down 7.11 per cent over one year and about 21 per cent below its 52-week high of Rs 44.27.
Defence ETFs give up ground
All three defence ETFs lost ground. Nifty India Defence ETF by Motilal Oswal (MODEFENCE) fell 1.23 per cent to Rs 99.99, Groww’s defence ETF (GROWWDEFNC) slipped 0.96 per cent to Rs 90.91, and BSE India Defence-Tracking ETF (DEFENCE) lost 1.35 per cent to Rs 76.23. Combined traded value was only about Rs 8 crore, a small base, so the moves should be read with that in mind. Each fund is down between 1.84 and 2.21 per cent over 30 days.
Liquid ETFs stay flat, as always
Liquid ETFs held remarkably steady. None of the 20 on the list fell by more than a paisa. Fourteen gained between 0.03 and 0.04 per cent, and six were unchanged. LiquidBeES (LIQUIDBEES) closed flat at Rs 1,000.00, yet it was the most traded ETF in the entire file at Rs 835.28 crore. LiquidCase (LIQUIDCASE) added 0.03 per cent to Rs 116.47 and Liquid1 (LIQUID1) rose 0.03 per cent to Rs 1,127.86. Over 30 days, the interest-bearing liquid ETFs have gained about 0.4 per cent.
