New Delhi, Sept 16: Indian ETFs told a story of convergence on Wednesday, a reversal from the sharp divergence seen in gold and silver just a session earlier. This time, both precious-metals categories rallied in tandem, tracking the continued spike in global crude and safe-haven demand tied to the unresolved Iran-Saudi conflict. Defence ETFs, last session’s standout gainers, cooled off and traded mixed, even as the broader equity market staged a partial recovery from Tuesday’s sharp sell-off. Liquid ETFs, meanwhile, stuck to their usual, near-motionless script, offering a reminder that not every corner of the ETF market moves with the headlines.

ETFs tracking silver prices lead the rally

Silver ETFs remained firmly in the green, continuing their broad-based advance from the previous session. ESilver led the pack, up 2.46 per cent to Rs 229.52, followed by SilverBeES, India’s largest silver ETF by traded value, which gained 1.83 per cent to Rs 218.60. HDFC Silver ETF rose 1.94 per cent to Rs 218.64, SilverIETF added 1.81 per cent to Rs 228, and SBI Silver ETF climbed 1.87 per cent to Rs 224.23. Tata Silver ETF and Silver1 both gained 2.02 per cent to Rs 22.22, while Silver001, which was the sole laggard in the previous session, also turned positive this time, up a more modest 0.78 per cent to Rs 23.18. With every silver ETF on the list trading higher, Wednesday’s rally, like the one before it, remains broad-based rather than stock-specific. Silver ETFs have now rallied nearly 75 per cent over the past year across most names on this list, and Wednesday’s upmove looks like a continuation of that multi-month uptrend rather than a fresh, standalone spike.

Gold ETFs join the rally this time

Unlike the previous session, when gold ETFs barely budged, Wednesday saw meaningful gains across the category. TWC Gold ETF led with a 2.01 per cent rise to Rs 150.71, while GoldBeES, India’s most traded gold ETF, gained 1.12 per cent to Rs 125. Tata Gold ETF added 1.17 per cent to Rs 14.69, Goldietf climbed 1.3 per cent to Rs 129.60, and HDFC Gold ETF rose 1.07 per cent to Rs 129.25. SETFGOLD gained 1.04 per cent to Rs 128.90, and Gold360 rose 1.37 per cent to Rs 147.80. A couple of thinly traded names bucked the broader trend, with Union Gold ETF slipping 0.9 per cent and AONE Gold ETF down a sharper 2.62 per cent, moves that appear more a function of low liquidity than any shift in the underlying gold price story. Overall, gold is no longer lagging silver the way it was a session ago, with both metals now moving broadly together, a more typical pattern for risk-off, safe-haven-driven trading days.

Defence ETFs cool off after their sharp run

Defence ETFs, which recorded the sharpest gains among all categories in the previous session, turned mixed on Wednesday. Nifty India Defence ETF by Motilal Oswal (MODEFENCE) slipped 0.11 per cent to Rs 100.65, and BSE India Defence-Tracking ETF eased 0.04 per cent to Rs 76.85. Groww’s defence ETF (GROWWDEFNC) was the lone gainer in the category, up 1.1 per cent to Rs 92.98. The pause suggests some profit-booking in a segment that had rallied sharply on rising geopolitical tensions, even as the underlying Nifty India Defence index itself slipped 0.37 per cent in Wednesday’s broader market trade.

Liquid ETFs remain steady, as always

Liquid ETFs continued to do what they do best: offer investors a place to park idle cash with virtually no price movement. LiquidBeES, Liquid1, LiquidCase, LiquidPlus and their peers all traded within a few paise of their fixed-unit NAVs of Rs 1,000 or thereabouts, with changes ranging from 0 to 0.03 per cent through the session. The category’s near-total lack of volatility, unlike the sharp moves seen in gold, silver and defence ETFs, continues to make liquid ETFs a preferred parking spot for investors staying on the sidelines amid ongoing market uncertainty.
