Chennai, July 15: Gold prices continued to soften in Chennai on Wednesday, although the pace of the decline slowed considerably. After witnessing a sharper correction over the past two trading sessions, the market moved almost sideways today, indicating that prices may be entering a consolidation phase.

According to today’s retail rates, 24-karat gold is selling at ₹14,345 per gram, down ₹1 from the previous session. 22-karat gold has slipped to ₹13,149 per gram, also lower by ₹1, while 18-karat gold is priced at ₹10,969 per gram, down ₹1.

Today’s fall is unlikely to have a major impact on retail buyers, but it does continue the broader trend that has unfolded since the first week of July. For families planning jewellery purchases, the recent correction means prices are now significantly lower than the monthly highs recorded just a few days ago.

Chennai Gold Rate Today

Purity  Price per gram  Change
24K Gold  ₹14,345  -₹1
22K Gold  ₹13,149  -₹1
18K Gold  ₹10,969  -₹1

The Sharp Rally Has Given Way to a Much Calmer Market

The beginning of July looked very different.

Gold prices climbed steadily during the first week of the month, with 24K gold touching ₹14,793 per gram on July 6, the highest level recorded in July so far. At the time, many buyers preferred to wait instead of purchasing at elevated prices, expecting the rally to cool.

That patience has paid off.

Over the past several sessions, gold has steadily given back a large part of those gains. Rather than witnessing one dramatic fall, prices have gradually drifted lower almost every day. Today’s rate of ₹14,345 per gram is ₹448 below the month’s high, making gold considerably cheaper than it was just over a week ago.

What Would 10 Grams of 22K Jewellery Cost Today?

The market rate of gold is only one part of your jewellery bill. Making charges and GST are added separately, so the amount you pay at the showroom will always be higher than the quoted gold price.

Based on today’s rates, assuming 12% making charges and 3% GST, here’s an estimate:

Component  Amount
Gold value  ₹1,31,490
Making charges (12%)  ₹15,779
GST (3%)  ₹4,418
Estimated final amount  ₹1,51,687

The final amount may vary depending on the jeweller, design selected, wastage charges and making charges applied.

10-Day Gold Price Trend

  • July 15: ₹14,345 (-₹1)
  • July 14: ₹14,346 (-₹54)
  • July 13: ₹14,400 (-₹109)
  • July 12: ₹14,509 (No change)
  • July 11: ₹14,509 (-₹55)
  • July 10: ₹14,564 (+₹33)
  • July 9: ₹14,531 (+₹76)
  • July 8: ₹14,455 (-₹163)
  • July 7: ₹14,618 (-₹175)
  • July 6: ₹14,793 (-₹153)

Gold’s movement over the past ten days shows how quickly sentiment has shifted. After reaching a monthly high during the first week of July, prices have remained under pressure almost every session. The correction has been gradual rather than sudden, suggesting that the market is cooling after an extended rally instead of witnessing panic selling.

July Performance So Far

Particulars  24K Gold  22K Gold
July 1 Price  ₹14,455  ₹13,250
July 15 Price  ₹14,345  ₹13,149
Highest in July  ₹14,793 (July 6)  ₹13,560 (July 6)
Lowest in July  ₹14,345 (July 15)  ₹13,149 (July 15)
Monthly Trend  -0.76%  -0.76%

Gold has now slipped well below where it started the month, reversing the gains made during the early-July rally. Although the correction has happened over several trading sessions rather than in one sharp fall, the overall direction has remained negative. For buyers, however, the softer prices offer a more favourable entry point than they did just a week ago.

Why Do Gold Prices Change Every Day?

Gold prices don’t move only because of local jewellery demand. International bullion prices, changes in the rupee’s exchange rate against the US dollar, import duties, inflation expectations, central bank decisions and geopolitical developments all influence how gold is priced in India.

Since these factors change almost every day, retail gold rates are updated daily across cities.

Conclusion

Gold prices in Chennai remained under pressure on July 15, with 24K gold easing to ₹14,345 per gram and 22K gold falling to ₹13,149 per gram. While today’s decline was minimal, it extended the broader correction that has been underway since the first week of July. Unless global bullion prices witness a strong rebound, gold is likely to remain around current levels in the near term, giving buyers a better opportunity than they had during the month’s peak.
