New Delhi, Oct 28: Gold prices rose for a third straight session on Wednesday, building on the gains of Monday and Tuesday. Ten grams of 24-carat (99.9% purity) gold now costs Rs 1,43,950 in most cities, according to Goodreturns.in. The price of 10 grams of 22-carat (91.6% purity) gold is Rs 1,31,950, while 18-carat (75% purity) gold sells at Rs 1,07,960. These are bullion rates and do not include taxes or making charges.

On Tuesday, 10 grams of 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold were priced at Rs 1,43,290, Rs 1,31,350 and Rs 1,07,570, respectively. Against those figures, today’s rates are higher by Rs 660, Rs 600 and Rs 390 per 10 grams in the Mumbai cluster of cities. In percentage terms, that works out to roughly 0.46% for 24-carat and 22-carat gold and about 0.36% for 18-carat gold. The 24-carat gain is bigger than Tuesday’s Rs 540, so the rebound is gathering pace rather than fading.

Per gram, 24-carat gold is at Rs 14,395, 22-carat at Rs 13,195 and 18-carat at Rs 10,796. Buyers therefore pay Rs 66, Rs 60 and Rs 39 more per gram than they did on Tuesday, when the rates were Rs 14,329, Rs 13,135 and Rs 10,757.

Bulk buyers will have to pay Rs 1,43,95,000 for one kilogram of 24-carat gold. A kilogram of 22-carat gold costs Rs 1,31,95,000 and 18-carat gold Rs 1,07,96,000, which is Rs 66,000, Rs 60,000 and Rs 39,000 more than on Tuesday.

Even after three gains in a row, gold is still a fair way off its recent high. Ten grams of 24-carat gold is Rs 3,490 below the Rs 1,47,440 it fetched on Friday, October 16, and Rs 7,030 below the Rs 1,50,980 of Monday, October 12, a fall of about 4.66%. That gap stood at 5.09% a day ago, so the market has clawed back a little under half a percentage point. Compared with Monday’s rate of Rs 1,42,750, the 24-carat price has added Rs 1,200 over two sessions.

Delhi remains the costliest city. Ten grams of 24-carat gold there is Rs 1,44,100, which is Rs 150 more than the Rs 1,43,950 charged in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune. The gap has not changed since Tuesday. The 22-carat rate follows the same pattern, with Delhi at Rs 1,32,100, again Rs 150 higher. In 18-carat gold, though, the picture has shifted: Delhi’s premium has widened to Rs 150 at Rs 1,08,110, up from Rs 50 on Tuesday. Vadodara and Ahmedabad quote 24-carat gold at Rs 1,44,000 per 10 grams, Rs 50 above the Mumbai cluster and unchanged from Tuesday. Chennai’s 18-carat price, which sat Rs 70 below the Mumbai cluster a day ago, has caught up and now stands at Rs 1,07,960 like the rest.

In 24K and 22K gold, every one of the ten cities saw the same gain, ₹660 and ₹600 per 10 grams respectively. Only 18K gold showed any spread. The Mumbai cluster added ₹390, Chennai ₹460, and Delhi, Vadodara and Ahmedabad ₹490 each. The Rs 150 gap between Delhi and the Mumbai cluster now holds across all three purities, after narrowing to Rs 50 in 18K on Tuesday.

Keep in mind that these are bullion rates. Jewellery will cost more once making charges, wastage charges and 3% GST are added. GST alone comes to about ₹4,319 on a 10-gram purchase of 24K gold at today’s rate, and about ₹3,959 on 22K and ₹3,239 on 18K for the same weight.

With Dhanteras and Diwali drawing closer, buyers will be watching whether the rebound can carry on after the slide from the October 12 peak. At ₹1,43,950 per 10 grams, 50 grams of 24K gold costs ₹7,19,750 before making charges and GST.

Jewellery Stocks Today

Jewellery stocks leaned weaker in early trade on Wednesday even as gold climbed. The Nifty 50 was at 22,638.25 around 9:55 am, down 111.50 points or 0.49 per cent from Tuesday’s close of 22,749.75. Only one of the four counters was in the green. Kalyan Jewellers India rose 0.13 per cent, while PC Jeweller slipped 0.24 per cent, Titan Company fell about 1.5 per cent and Thangamayil Jewellery lost 1.83 per cent.

Titan Company opened lower at ₹4,340.00 against a previous close of ₹4,365.90, down 0.59 per cent, and never managed to get back to that level. Its high of the day was ₹4,346.70. It then slid to a low of ₹4,290.00, 1.74 per cent below the previous close. The stock was quoted near ₹4,300 at the time, a shade under its volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of ₹4,306.17.

Kalyan Jewellers India was the exception. It opened at ₹502.00 against a previous close of ₹500.00, and that opening price turned out to be its high of the morning. It then dropped to a low of ₹492.65, 1.47 per cent below the previous close, before recovering through the session. It is at ₹500.65, up ₹0.65 or 0.13 per cent, and above its VWAP of ₹497.69.

Thangamayil Jewellery opened at ₹4,780.00 against a previous close of ₹4,762.00 and touched a high of ₹4,785.00 soon after. Selling then took over, and the stock fell to a low of ₹4,670.00, 1.93 per cent below the previous close. It is trading at ₹4,675.00, down ₹87.00 or 1.83 per cent, and below its VWAP of ₹4,692.46.

PC Jeweller opened at ₹16.70 against a previous close of ₹16.65 and touched a high of ₹16.79. It then slipped to a low of ₹16.45, 1.20 per cent below the previous close, and has since recovered to ₹16.61, down ₹0.04 or 0.24 per cent. The stock is just above its VWAP of ₹16.59.

Gold rose Rs 660 per 10 grams on Wednesday, yet three of the four jewellery counters fell, along with a Nifty 50 that was down 0.49 per cent. Kalyan Jewellers India outperformed the index and PC Jeweller held up better than the benchmark, while Titan and Thangamayil Jewellery lagged. It is a reversal from Tuesday, when three of the four counters rose.

Order book data showed a split. Buyers led on Kalyan Jewellers India at 62.71 per cent, with 3,66,185 shares against 2,17,712 on the sell side, and on Titan at 60.06 per cent, with 54,392 shares against 36,171. Sellers were ahead on Thangamayil Jewellery at 54.78 per cent, with 4,129 shares against 3,409, and on PC Jeweller at 66.15 per cent, with 4,11,03,862 shares against 2,10,35,306.

The rupee is another factor to watch. USD/INR futures for October 28 were quoted at ₹95.13 around 9:54 am, and a weaker rupee tends to make imported gold costlier in domestic terms.

Gold and silver ETFs were all in the red on Tuesday, even though bullion rates rose for a second straight session. ETF prices move through the trading day on exchange demand and supply, so they do not always follow the day’s quoted bullion rate. Gold ETFs in India are an option for investors who want to invest in gold without buying the physical metal. Click here to know more: https://hdfcsky.com/etf/gold-etf
