New Delhi, Oct 16: Gold prices held steady on Friday. According to Goodreturns.in, 10 grams of 24-carat (99.9% purity) gold costs Rs 1,47,440 in most cities. The price of 10 grams of 22-carat (91.6% purity) gold is Rs 1,35,150, while 18-carat (75% purity) gold is selling at Rs 1,10,580.

On Thursday, 10 grams of 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold cost exactly the same, Rs 1,47,440, Rs 1,35,150 and Rs 1,10,580, respectively, so there is no change in any of the three categories. The pause follows three straight falls from Tuesday to Thursday.

On a per-gram basis, 24-carat gold costs Rs 14,744, 22-carat gold Rs 13,515 and 18-carat gold Rs 11,058 in the Mumbai cluster of cities, exactly where they stood on Thursday.

For bulk buyers, one kilogram of 24-carat gold costs Rs 1,47,44,000, while 22-carat and 18-carat gold cost Rs 1,35,15,000 and Rs 1,10,58,000, respectively. These too are unchanged from Thursday.

The price of 10 grams of 24-carat gold is still Rs 3,540 lower than Monday’s price of Rs 1,50,980, a fall of about 2.3%. It is also Rs 3,270 lower than last Friday’s price of Rs 1,50,710 and Rs 1,740 below the Rs 1,49,180 recorded a week ago on Monday.

Over the week, the 24-carat rate has gone from Rs 1,50,980 on Monday to Rs 1,49,290 on Tuesday, Rs 1,48,260 on Wednesday and Rs 1,47,440 on Thursday and Friday. That is Rs 3,540 off in four sessions, with the biggest fall of Rs 1,690 coming on Tuesday and the smallest of Rs 820 on Thursday, so the pace of decline had been easing before today’s pause.

Domestic gold prices are influenced by international prices and the USD-INR exchange rate. As of 10:04 am, the October 28 USD-INR futures contract on the NSE was at Rs 94.9450, lower than the Rs 95.0850 recorded on Thursday morning and roughly Re 1 below Monday morning’s Rs 95.9200. A firmer rupee makes imported gold cheaper, yet domestic rates did not move today.

Delhi continues to be the costliest city, with 10 grams of 24-carat gold priced at Rs 1,47,590. This is Rs 150 more than the rate of Rs 1,47,440 in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune. The gap has not changed since Thursday. In per-gram terms, Delhi’s 24-carat rate is Rs 14,759 against Rs 14,744 in the Mumbai cluster, which works out to Rs 15,000 more per kilogram.

A similar trend can be seen in 22-carat and 18-carat gold prices, with Delhi charging Rs 150 more per 10 grams than the Mumbai cluster. Vadodara and Ahmedabad have 24-carat prices of Rs 1,47,490 per 10 grams, which is Rs 50 higher than the Mumbai cluster. In Chennai, 10 grams of 18-carat gold is priced at Rs 1,11,150, Rs 570 higher than the Mumbai cluster.

Every row in the three tables shows no change. A 10-gram purchase costs the same as on Thursday in all ten cities, with Delhi, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and, for 18K gold, Chennai carrying the same small premiums over the Mumbai cluster as before.

Keep in mind that these are bullion rates. Jewellery will cost more than these rates because you will have to pay making charges, wastage charges and 3% GST on the value of the gold. GST alone adds about ₹4,423 on a 10-gram purchase of 24K gold at today’s rate.

With the festive season approaching and Dussehra, Dhanteras and Diwali still to come, buyers will be watching whether the rate stays flat or starts moving again after three straight falls. At ₹1,47,440 per 10 grams, 50 grams of 24K gold costs ₹7,37,200 before making charges and GST. A 22K chain weighing 20 grams would cost ₹2,70,300 in gold value alone at ₹1,35,150 per 10 grams, the same as on Thursday.

Titan Company opened at ₹4,455.00 against a previous close of ₹4,455.80 and slid to a low of ₹4,431.60 around 9:20 am, or 0.54 per cent below the previous close. It recovered past the previous close by about 9:30 am and touched a high of ₹4,466.50 close to 10:00 am. It is trading at ₹4,464.60, up 0.20 per cent and above its volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of ₹4,451.05.

Kalyan Jewellers India opened at ₹559.00 against a previous close of ₹558.85 and fell to a low of ₹555.60 around 9:20 am, or 0.58 per cent below the previous close. It then climbed to a high of ₹560.95 around 9:45 am. It is trading at ₹559.80, up 0.17 per cent and above its VWAP of ₹558.91.

Thangamayil Jewellery was the standout. It opened at ₹4,775.00 against a previous close of ₹4,791.00, a gap-down of about 0.3 per cent, and touched a low of ₹4,759.50 in the first few minutes. It then climbed steadily to a high of ₹5,056.50 around 9:40 am, 5.54 per cent above the previous close. It is trading at ₹5,003.00, up 4.42 per cent and above its VWAP of ₹4,976.04.

Compared with Thursday’s morning levels, two of the three counters are higher. Thangamayil Jewellery is up ₹188.00 or 3.90 per cent from ₹4,815.00 and Titan Company by ₹26.90 or 0.61 per cent from ₹4,437.70. Kalyan Jewellers India is down ₹1.20 or 0.21 per cent from ₹561.00.

Gold did not move on Friday, so the jump in Thangamayil Jewellery does not look like a read-through from the metal. With the Nifty 50 up only 0.24 per cent, the stock’s rise of 4.42 per cent is far stronger than the market’s. The data used for this report does not show what triggered it.

Order book data showed a split. Buyers led on Titan Company, with 60.10 per cent of total quantity on the buy side, or 60,784 shares against 40,358 on the sell side. Sellers led on Thangamayil Jewellery at 59.00 per cent, with 9,253 shares against 6,429, despite the surge, and on Kalyan Jewellers India at 54.11 per cent, with 4,20,338 shares against 3,56,459.
