New Delhi, Oct 19: Gold prices rose on Monday, a day before Dussehra on Tuesday, a festival when many families buy gold for good luck. According to Goodreturns.in, 10 grams of 24-carat (99.9% purity) gold costs Rs 1,48,040 in most cities. The price of 10 grams of 22-carat (91.6% purity) gold is Rs 1,35,700, while 18-carat (75% purity) gold is selling at Rs 1,11,030.

On Friday, 10 grams of 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold cost Rs 1,47,440, Rs 1,35,150 and Rs 1,10,580, respectively. This represents increases of Rs 600, Rs 550 and Rs 450 per 10 grams, respectively, or around 0.41% across all three categories. It is the first rise since Monday, October 12.

On a per-gram basis, 24-carat gold costs Rs 14,804, 22-carat gold Rs 13,570 and 18-carat gold Rs 11,103 in the Mumbai cluster of cities. Buyers will therefore pay Rs 60, Rs 55 and Rs 45 more per gram, respectively, than Friday’s rates.

For bulk buyers, one kilogram of 24-carat gold costs Rs 1,48,04,000, while 22-carat and 18-carat gold cost Rs 1,35,70,000 and Rs 1,11,03,000, respectively. This is Rs 60,000, Rs 55,000 and Rs 45,000 more than Friday’s rates.

The price of 10 grams of 24-carat gold is still Rs 2,940 lower than Monday, October 12, when it stood at Rs 1,50,980, so today’s rise recovers only about 17% of the Rs 3,540 it lost between that day and Thursday.

Today’s gain of Rs 600 is the first upward move since October 12 and is smaller than each of the three falls that followed, the smallest of which was Rs 820 on Thursday.

Delhi continues to be the costliest city, with 10 grams of 24-carat gold priced at Rs 1,48,190. This is Rs 150 more than the rate of Rs 1,48,040 in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune. The gap has not changed since Friday.

A similar trend can be seen in 22-carat and 18-carat gold prices, with Delhi charging Rs 150 more per 10 grams than the Mumbai cluster. Vadodara and Ahmedabad have 24-carat prices of Rs 1,48,090 per 10 grams, which is Rs 50 higher than the Mumbai cluster. In Chennai, 10 grams of 18-carat gold is priced at Rs 1,11,550, Rs 520 higher than the Mumbai cluster, narrowing from Rs 570 on Friday.

Every row in the three tables shows a rise. In 24K and 22K gold, all ten cities saw the same increase of ₹600 and ₹550 per 10 grams, respectively, while 18K gold rose by ₹450 in nine cities and ₹400 in Chennai.

Keep in mind that these are bullion rates. Jewellery will cost more than these rates because you will have to pay making charges, wastage charges and 3% GST on the value of the gold. GST alone adds about ₹4,441 on a 10-gram purchase of 24K gold at today’s rate.

With the festive season approaching and Dussehra, Dhanteras and Diwali still to come, buyers will be watching whether today’s rise is the start of a rebound or just a pause in the fall. At ₹1,48,040 per 10 grams, 50 grams of 24K gold costs ₹7,40,200 before making charges and GST. A 22K chain weighing 20 grams would cost ₹2,71,400 in gold value alone at ₹1,35,700 per 10 grams, which is ₹1,100 more than on Friday.
