Mumbai, Aug 5: Gold prices in India bounced back firmly on Wednesday, reversing two straight sessions of losses as fresh buying interest returned to the bullion market.

The national rate for gold stood at Rs 1,45,750 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,33,600 for 22 karat gold, and Rs 1,09,310 for 18 karat gold per 10 grams on Wednesday morning. This marks a sharp gain of Rs 1,750, Rs 1,600 and Rs 1,310, respectively, from Tuesday’s levels of Rs 1,44,000, Rs 1,32,000 and Rs 1,08,000 per 10 grams, when the metal had extended Monday’s pullback amid routine profit-booking.

Dealers said the rebound reflects a fresh bout of safe-haven buying, with sentiment turning cautious again after contradictory signals from Washington and Tehran clouded the outlook for a durable resolution to the Iran-US standoff. Global spot gold also firmed in early Asian trade on Wednesday, tracking a softer dollar index, as investors once again sought shelter in bullion amid the uncertain geopolitical backdrop. The sharp move higher comes just a day after gold had slipped on routine profit-taking, underscoring how quickly sentiment continues to swing in either direction.

Market participants said the US Federal Reserve’s stance heading into its September meeting remains a key swing factor for gold, even as Wednesday’s rally was driven more by immediate safe-haven demand than by any shift in rate-cut expectations. Dealers added that physical demand at jewellery counters has continued to hold up well through the recent bout of volatility, with wedding-season buying lending additional support to prices even as the metal notches fresh gains on the day.

City-Wise Gold Rates

City-wise, gold rates published by Goodreturns.in are quoted per gram; these have been converted to per 10 gram rates for ease of comparison. Chennai again commanded the widest premium among major cities on Wednesday, particularly in 18 karat gold, where the city’s rate of Rs 1,11,750 per 10 grams ran roughly Rs 2,440 ahead of the national average, even as its 24 karat and 22 karat rates of Rs 1,45,750 and Rs 1,33,600, respectively, tracked the national benchmark exactly. Delhi remained the second-costliest major market, with 24 karat gold quoted at Rs 1,45,900, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,33,750 and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,09,460 per 10 grams, all running a modest Rs 150 above the national rate.

Vadodara and Ahmedabad once again moved in lockstep with each other, quoting a smaller premium of about Rs 50 over the national rate, with 24 karat gold at Rs 1,45,800, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,33,650 and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,09,360 per 10 grams in both cities. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune, meanwhile, all traded exactly in line with the national average of Rs 1,45,750 for 24 karat, Rs 1,33,600 for 22 karat and Rs 1,09,310 for 18 karat gold per 10 grams, continuing the pattern of close alignment seen across most of the country through the week.

Silver prices, which have largely moved in a tight, flat range through the week, were also seen edging marginally higher in early trade on Wednesday, tracking gold’s rebound rather than showing independent momentum. Traders said the two metals are likely to keep taking cues from one another over the coming sessions, with any fresh escalation or resolution in the Middle East expected to have an outsized influence on both.
