Mumbai, Aug 6: Gold prices in India extended their rebound on Thursday, with the national rate for 24 karat gold at Rs 1,49,730, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,37,250, and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,12,300 per 10 grams, as per data compiled by goodreturns.in. These levels mark a rise of Rs 3,980 for 24 karat, Rs 3,650 for 22 karat, and Rs 2,990 for 18 karat gold over Wednesday’s national rates of Rs 1,45,750, Rs 1,33,600, and Rs 1,09,310 per 10 grams, respectively, as the metal built on the previous session’s gains. Traders said the fresh advance came amid a softer dollar index and persistent safe-haven demand, with the unresolved Iran-US standoff continuing to keep bullion firmly in favour among domestic and global investors alike.
Gold had already staged a sharp rebound on Wednesday, reversing two straight sessions of losses as fresh safe-haven buying returned to the bullion market. Dealers had attributed the move to renewed caution around the Iran-US standoff, even as the US Federal Reserve’s stance ahead of its September meeting continued to hang over the outlook for rate-sensitive assets such as gold.
City-Wise Gold Rates
City-wise, rates published by goodreturns.in are quoted per gram and have been converted to per 10 gram figures here for ease of comparison. Chennai continued to command the steepest premium among major cities on Thursday, with 24 karat gold priced at Rs 1,50,000, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,37,500, and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,15,650 per 10 grams, the 18 karat rate running more than Rs 3,300 above the national average even as its 24 karat and 22 karat rates stayed closer to the benchmark. Delhi remained the second-costliest major market, with 24 karat gold quoted at Rs 1,49,860, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,37,400, and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,12,450 per 10 grams, a modest premium of roughly Rs 130 to Rs 150 over the national rate, continuing the pattern seen through the week of the capital trading at a slight markup to the rest of the country.
Vadodara and Ahmedabad once again moved in lockstep with each other, quoting a smaller premium of about Rs 30 to Rs 50 over the national rate, with 24 karat gold at Rs 1,49,760, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,37,300, and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,12,350 per 10 grams in both cities. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala, and Pune, meanwhile, all traded exactly in line with the national average of Rs 1,49,730 for 24 karat, Rs 1,37,250 for 22 karat, and Rs 1,12,300 for 18 karat gold per 10 grams, continuing the pattern of close alignment seen across most of the country through the week, with only Chennai, Delhi, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad diverging meaningfully from the benchmark.
With gold having now advanced for a second straight session, market watchers said near-term direction will likely hinge on how the Iran-US standoff evolves and on incoming cues from Washington ahead of the Fed’s September meeting.
