New Delhi: India’s power consumption grew 12.85 per cent year-on-year to 169.01 billion units (BU) in August, official data showed, as high humidity levels pushed up use of cooling appliances like air conditioners in many parts of the country.

The country’s total power consumption was 149.76 BU in August 2025.

Higher feel-like temperatures than the actual temperature, caused by humid conditions across the country, increased use of cooling appliances like air conditioners, raising power demand and consumption, according to experts.

The peak power demand also jumped to 258.27 GW last month from 229.72 GW in August 2025.

The peak power demand in August, however, remained well below the record high of 270.82 GW seen in May.

Last summer, the peak power demand was 242.77 GW, recorded in June 2025, but stayed below the government’s estimate of 277 GW.

Experts said power demand will remain steady in September as well, with continued humid conditions in the ongoing monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected deficient rainfall in this year’s monsoon.

The latest forecast also indicates less rainfall than normal in September.

According to experts, the projected weather conditions may also push power demand and consumption in September.
