Berlin/New Delhi, October 24: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal communicated that India will not rush into trade agreements or negotiate trade deals under pressure exerted by external forces. He added that all the trade agreements India makes are made keeping in mind the national interest of India and its long-term strategy.

Piyush Goyal communicated these statements while speaking at the Berlin Dialogue in Germany. In his speech, he stated that India is engaged in active negotiations with several partners, including the European Union (EU) and the United States, but stressed that deadlines or political pressure will not dictate the pace of these talks. “We are in active dialogue with the EU, and we are talking to the US. But we do not do deals in a hurry, and we do not do deals with deadlines or with a gun to our head,” Goyal said.

Focusing on Long-term Gains

The minister also said that India views trade partnerships as long-term relationships that must be stable and beneficial for everyone involved. He stressed that India doesn’t make quick or impulsive decisions regarding international economic matters, highlighting the government’s careful approach. He also added that India is actively looking for new markets to sell its products to, which helps the country deal with challenges like high import taxes (tariffs) in some places and keep its export growth steady.

National Interest Above All

When asked about the fairness of India’s ongoing trade negotiations, Goyal said : “I do not think India has ever decided who its friends will be based on any other considerations. If someone tells me we can’t be friends with the EU or Kenya, that’s not acceptable,” he stated.

Global policymakers, business leaders, and trade experts participated in the Berlin Dialogue. It included discussions on strengthening international economic cooperation and sustainable trade frameworks.
