Mumbai, September 11: Indian sectoral indices ended largely lower on Friday as persistent concerns over elevated crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty kept investors cautious. Selling was particularly pronounced in metal and realty stocks, while private-sector banks emerged as one of the few pockets of strength and helped the benchmark indices recover from their intraday lows.
The Nifty Metal and Nifty Realty indices fell more than 2% each, making them the worst-performing sectoral gauges of the session. The broader weakness was also reflected in mid- and small-cap stocks, with the Nifty Midcap index declining 0.26% and the Smallcap index falling 0.6%.
Financials Provide Some Support
Financial stocks offered some respite to the broader market, with the Nifty Private Bank index rising 0.5% during the session.
HDFC Bank was among the notable gainers on the Nifty, helping limit the decline in the benchmark. The stock rose 2% today, extending its gains from Thursday when it had snapped a three day losing streak as analysts pointed to three key positives for the lender — clarity on CEO succession, resolution of the US legal case and stabilisation in net interest margins (NIMs).
Yes Bank jumped 5.3% while Kotak Mahindra Bank rose 0.6%. Buying in select private lenders provided some stability to financial stocks even as investors remained cautious about the impact of higher oil prices on inflation, interest rates and economic growth.
The relative resilience in private banks also helped the Nifty pare a significant portion of its intraday losses. However, gains in the financial space were not broad enough to offset weakness across several cyclical sectors.
Metal Stocks Bear Brunt Of Selling
Metal stocks came under heavy selling pressure, with the Nifty Metal index declining more than 2%. Hindalco Industries, JSW Steel and Tata Steel were among the biggest Nifty losers.
The decline in metal stocks weighed heavily on the broader market, with investors cutting exposure to cyclical and commodity-linked counters. The sector’s weakness also came amid a broader risk-off tone in equities, as elevated crude prices continued to raise concerns about inflation and corporate profitability.
Realty Stocks Fall Over 2%
Real estate stocks were another major pocket of weakness, with the Nifty Realty index also falling more than 2%.
The decline in the rate-sensitive sector came as investors remained wary of the broader macroeconomic impact of rising energy prices. Realty stocks tend to be particularly sensitive to borrowing costs and interest-rate expectations, making them vulnerable when inflationary pressures increase. Godrej Properties fell 6.6% while Lodha Developers declined 4%.
Auto, Energy, Oil & Gas Also Decline
The selling extended to several other sectors. Auto, Energy, Oil & Gas and PSU Bank indices each declined around 0.5%. Eicher Motors was among the notable Nifty laggards, while ONGC also featured among the stocks weighing on the benchmark. The weakness in upstream ONGC came despite crude oil prices remaining elevated.
IT Gains
Select defensive and large-cap stocks provided some support to the market. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, ITC, Tech Mahindra and Wipro were among the notable Nifty gainers.
The gains in pharmaceutical, FMCG and select IT stocks helped the benchmarks recover from their intraday lows, although the overall market remained weak.Market breadth reflected the cautious sentiment, with 1,773 shares advancing against 2,373 declines, while 190 stocks ended unchanged on the NSE. The broad-based selling kept the market under pressure despite late-session recovery in select heavyweight stocks.
