Mumbai, 29 October 2026: India VIX declined 1.14 points, or 7.02%, to 15.11 at the close of trading on Thursday, 29 October 2026, compared with the previous close of 16.25. The index opened at 16.24, touched an intraday high of 16.57 and fell to a low of 15.09. The decline coincided with a recovery in Indian equities, foreign institutional buying, a stronger rupee and developments surrounding US monetary policy, crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions.
India VIX Falls 7.02% as Indian Equities Recover
Indian equity markets recovered during Thursday’s session after opening on a relatively muted note. By 10:24 am IST, the Nifty 50 had gained 0.54% to 22,821.85, while the Sensex advanced 0.61% to 73,693.22. At that stage, 15 of 16 major sectors were trading higher. Subsequent market updates reported that the Sensex had gained around 900 points, while the Nifty moved above 22,900.
The equity recovery coincided with the decline in India VIX. The index measures the market’s expected volatility in the Nifty 50 over approximately the next 30 calendar days, based on index-option prices. Its movement reflects changes in the prices of options used to estimate expected volatility.
The fall from 16.25 to 15.11 represented a reduction of 1.14 points during the session. However, the index’s movement does not establish that all domestic and international risks had subsided. The session also unfolded against continuing concerns about crude oil prices, global bond yields and the Middle East conflict.
FII Buying and Tax-Cut Hopes Support Market Gains
Foreign institutional investor (FII) buying was among the factors reported to have supported Indian equities on Thursday. Expectations of a possible reduction in long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and easing bond yields were also identified as supportive developments.
The tax-related factor concerned expectations of a possible policy change. No announcement or implementation of an LTCG tax reduction was established in the available information for 29 October. The development therefore remained an expectation rather than a confirmed policy decision.
Institutional activity was another element of the market backdrop. On 28 October, foreign institutional investors recorded net purchases of ₹872 crore, while domestic institutional investors recorded net purchases of ₹643 crore in the cash market. These figures relate to the previous trading session and should not be interpreted as the confirmed institutional flow totals for Thursday.
The reported FII buying on 29 October coincided with the equity recovery and the decline in India VIX. However, the available information does not quantify the contribution of institutional flows or tax-related expectations to the index’s closing movement.
Rupee Strengthens to ₹95.17 Against US Dollar
The Indian rupee strengthened to ₹95.17 against the US dollar in early trading on Thursday, compared with its previous close of ₹95.28. The movement was partly attributed to a softer US dollar following the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision.
Currency movements remained relevant to the domestic market because exchange-rate changes can affect imported inflation, the cost of imported inputs and foreign investment returns. The rupee’s early appreciation formed part of Thursday’s broader market developments, although the reported rate was not the confirmed closing exchange rate.
Easing bond yields were also cited among the factors supporting the equity rally. The available information does not establish a direct or separately measurable relationship between either the currency movement or bond yields and India VIX’s decline to 15.11.
Fed Holds Rates at 3.75%-4% Amid Inflation Concerns
The US Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75%-4% on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. The decision was known before Indian markets opened on Thursday and formed part of the international backdrop for the session.
The Federal Reserve cited elevated inflation and the need for additional economic data. Although the decision provided a reference point for global markets, concerns about inflation and future monetary policy remained. Reports also highlighted higher US Treasury yields following the decision.
Higher US yields can influence the relative attractiveness of dollar-denominated assets and affect currency movements and capital flows involving emerging markets. These developments remained relevant to the Indian market alongside domestic factors. However, the available information does not establish that the Federal Reserve’s decision or the subsequent movement in US bond yields directly caused India VIX to fall.
Brent Crude Stays Above $114 Amid Middle East Risks
Brent crude eased during Thursday’s morning trading but remained above $114 per barrel. The reported price was approximately $114.63, while West Texas Intermediate crude traded at around $101.74.
Elevated crude prices remained an important domestic economic consideration because India relies heavily on imported oil. Changes in international oil prices can affect the import bill, inflation, the current-account balance and operating costs in energy-sensitive industries, including aviation, paints and chemicals.
Geopolitical developments also remained part of the international backdrop. Market coverage referred to the unresolved Iran conflict, limited diplomatic progress and continuing concerns about regional energy supplies. Reports also linked an earlier increase in oil prices to an attack on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery.
The slight easing in crude prices during the morning did not remove the wider uncertainty surrounding energy supplies. The available information does not establish a new geopolitical breakthrough during Thursday’s Indian trading session or quantify the effect of these developments on the closing India VIX level.
Asian Markets and Corporate Earnings Add Mixed Signals
Asian equity markets delivered mixed signals on Thursday. South Korea, Shenzhen and Taiwan recorded weakness, while Australia, Singapore and Malaysia advanced. US markets had closed higher on Wednesday, providing a contrasting backdrop to the varied performance across the region.
Corporate earnings also remained on the domestic market calendar. Companies scheduled to report results included Coal India, Asian Paints, InterGlobe Aviation, Trent, Ambuja Cements, Godrej Consumer Products and Suzlon Energy.
Quarterly results can produce company-specific price movements and affect broader indices when major constituents experience significant changes. However, the available information identifies the earnings calendar without establishing that individual announcements were responsible for the movement in India VIX.
India VIX closed at 15.11 on 29 October 2026, down 7.02% from its previous close of 16.25. The session coincided with an Indian equity recovery and developments involving institutional activity, currency movements, US monetary policy, crude oil and geopolitical risks. These figures provide a record of the day’s market conditions without establishing a single cause for the index’s decline.
