Mumbai, October 29: Indian equity benchmarks rebounded sharply on Thursday as the US Federal Reserve’s decision to hold interest rates steady and upbeat corporate earnings lifted investor sentiment. The Sensex surged 905 points, while the Nifty 50 reclaimed the 22,900 mark, with gains across financials, FMCG and other sectors outweighing concerns over elevated crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions.
At close, the BSE Sensex advanced 905.01 points, or 1.24%, to 74,151.04, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 237.90 points, or 1.05%, to settle at 22,936.75. The recovery followed a period of sustained selling, during which both benchmarks had fallen in six of the past eight sessions amid rising oil prices and concerns over their implications for inflation, interest rates and the rupee.
Market breadth remained positive, with 2,443 stocks advancing, 1,615 declining and 127 remaining unchanged. The Nifty midcap and smallcap indices also gained around 1% each, indicating that buying extended beyond heavyweight stocks.
Adani Stocks, Kotak Mahindra Bank Lead Nifty Gainers
Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Power Grid Corporation and Eternal featured among the biggest Nifty 50 gainers. Trent, Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki, SBI Life Insurance and Hindalco Industries were among the key laggards.
Adani Ports rose 6.3% to nearly four-month high after reporting higher quarterly profit on stronger cargo volumes and raising its operating profit guidance. Adani Enterprises, which is the flagship firm of Adani Group, also advanced 5.2% following its earnings announcement. Power Grid and NTPC gained 3.4% and 2.2%, respectively, amid expectations of stronger electricity demand, while financial stocks attracted buying interest.
FMCG, Financials Lead Sectoral Rally
Most sectoral indices ended in positive territory, with auto stocks the notable exception. Banking, energy, consumer durables, media, infrastructure, IT, PSU banks and private banks gained around 1% each, while metal, oil and gas, and realty stocks advanced more than 0.5%.
The Nifty midcap and smallcap indices rose around 1% apiece, reflecting a broader recovery in risk appetite. The gains across sectors marked a reversal from the recent selling pressure, although investors remained selective amid elevated crude prices and uncertainty over global economic conditions.
Fed Holds Rates Steady; Oil Prices Ease
The US Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75%-4%, as expected, while indicating that inflation remained elevated. The decision offered some reassurance to equity markets, although uncertainty over the future trajectory of US monetary policy continues to influence foreign investment flows into emerging markets.
Crude oil prices also eased on Thursday amid hopes of renewed diplomatic engagement between the US and Iran. Brent crude futures fell 1% to $114.2 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude declined 1.4% to $101.4. Despite the retreat, oil prices remained high enough to pose risks to India’s import bill, inflation outlook and corporate margins.
Foreign portfolio investors bought Indian shares worth Rs 872 crore on Wednesday, marking a second consecutive session of net buying, according to provisional data. However, they have offloaded $3.74 billion worth of Indian equities so far in October, underscoring the pressure on domestic markets from global macroeconomic concerns.
What Lies Ahead for Indian Markets?
Investors will track crude oil prices, foreign fund flows, rupee movements and corporate earnings for further direction. Thursday’s rebound offered relief after recent losses, with broad-based buying helping benchmarks recover ground.
However, sustained gains will depend on whether oil prices moderate further and earnings momentum supports valuations. Persistent geopolitical tensions, elevated energy costs and uncertainty over the global interest-rate outlook remain key risks for Indian equities.
