Mumbai, 14 October 2026: India VIX rose 0.45 points, or 3.19%, to 14.49 as of 10:16 am IST on Wednesday, according to the provided market data. The volatility index opened at 14.12, matching its previous close, before moving within a day range of 13.79 to 14.63. Rising crude oil prices, continued foreign portfolio investor outflows and uncertainty ahead of US inflation data formed the broader market backdrop, while the previous session’s equity rally and domestic institutional buying provided counterbalancing factors.
India VIX Gains 3.19% After Opening Unchanged at 14.12
The index’s early movement indicated a departure from its opening level, with India VIX climbing to 14.49 by 10:16 am. Its intraday high stood at 14.63, while the low was 13.79. The index had a 52-week range of 8.72 to 28.90, and its year-to-date return was reported at 52.64%.
The latest reading followed a substantial decline during the previous session. On 13 October, India VIX closed at 14.12, down 7.41% from the previous close of 15.25. Its previous-session high was 15.35, while the low was approximately 13.94–13.95. The latest increase therefore came after volatility had eased during Tuesday’s equity rally.
India VIX measures the options market’s expectations of near-term volatility in the Nifty 50. Its movement reflects changes in expected market fluctuations rather than the direction of share prices alone.
Crude Oil Near $107 Raises Concerns Over Indian Market Stability
Crude oil prices remained a significant concern during Wednesday’s opening session. Renewed supply uncertainty linked to fighting involving Yemen’s Houthi faction and Saudi Arabia pushed oil prices higher. Global market coverage placed Brent crude at approximately $106.60 per barrel, while US crude was reported at $94.96. Another early report cited oil prices around $107 per barrel.
Higher crude prices are particularly relevant to India because the country relies heavily on imported energy. Rising import costs can affect the trade balance, inflation, currency stability and corporate operating expenses. Industries such as aviation, paints and selected consumer businesses are also exposed to changes in energy costs.
The combination of geopolitical uncertainty and elevated oil prices added to the risks surrounding the Indian market. However, the extent to which crude oil affected India VIX depended on whether the uncertainty translated into wider expected fluctuations in Nifty 50 prices.
Foreign Investors Sell ₹1,305.13 Crore for 13th Session
Foreign investor outflows remained another important development entering Wednesday’s session. Provisional exchange data for 13 October showed foreign portfolio investors selling approximately ₹1,305.13 crore worth of Indian equities, extending the reported selling streak to 13 consecutive sessions.
Domestic institutional investors provided an offset, purchasing approximately ₹2,439.24 crore of equities during the previous session. These figures relate to Tuesday’s trading and should not be interpreted as confirmed flows for 14 October.
The difference between foreign selling and domestic institutional buying was an important part of the market backdrop. Continued overseas outflows can coincide with pressure on equities, while domestic purchases can help absorb available selling. Their effect on India VIX depends on how these transactions influence broader index movements and the pricing of options.
Nifty 50 Slips 0.10% After Tuesday’s 1.60% Rally
The Nifty 50 closed at 22,721.95 on 13 October, gaining 358.60 points, or 1.60%. The rally was supported by information technology shares, following better-than-expected quarterly earnings from HCLTech. Expectations surrounding possible discussions on long-term capital gains tax and securities transaction tax also contributed to the previous session’s market backdrop, although no tax change was confirmed.
Wednesday’s opening was considerably more subdued. GIFT Nifty was around 22,764 at 7:50 am IST, indicating a largely flat start. At approximately 9:28 am, the Nifty 50 stood at 22,698.80, down 23.15 points, or 0.10%. The Sensex was down 31.24 points, or 0.04%, at approximately 9:27 am.
The modest decline contrasted with Tuesday’s strong advance. Whether the market stabilised or experienced wider intraday fluctuations remained relevant to the volatility index’s subsequent movement.
US Inflation Data and Treasury Yields Add Global Uncertainty
Investors were also awaiting the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation report scheduled for later on 14 October. The available report cited analysts’ expectations for headline inflation to rise to 3.6% year on year, amid concerns about energy-driven price pressures. It also reported a 22% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October being priced by markets.
The inflation figures had not been released by the time Indian markets opened. A higher-than-expected reading could affect expectations for US interest rates, bond yields and the dollar, while a softer result could alter the outlook for monetary policy. The pending release therefore remained a scheduled global event rather than a confirmed outcome influencing the Indian opening.
US Treasury yields were also elevated, with the 10-year yield reported at approximately 5.21%–5.23% and the two-year yield around 4.79%. Higher yields can influence global financing conditions and cross-border capital flows.
Meanwhile, US equities finished the previous session slightly lower. The Dow Jones declined 0.35%, the S&P 500 fell 0.02%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.15%. Mixed bank earnings, inflation concerns, elevated yields and geopolitical developments formed part of the backdrop.
Asian Shares Recover as Technology Stocks Rebound
Asian equities offered a partial offset to the concerns surrounding oil and inflation. Early on 14 October, the MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan rose 0.5%, South Korea’s Kospi advanced 1.8%, and Japan’s Nikkei gained 0.2%. The recovery followed renewed strength in some artificial intelligence-related semiconductor shares after a recent sell-off.
The regional gains provided a more constructive global equity backdrop, although they did not remove uncertainty surrounding energy supplies or the upcoming US CPI release.
Currency movements also remained relevant. The Indian rupee strengthened by 49 paise to ₹95.28 per US dollar at the close on 13 October, following Reserve Bank of India measures aimed at curbing speculative currency positions and supporting the rupee. This was a previous-session closing rate, not a confirmed reading for Wednesday’s opening.
Earnings, Technical Levels and October History Provide Context
Investors were tracking results from BHEL, Canara Bank, ICICI Lombard, HDB Financial Services, CEAT and Tata Technologies. Company-specific developments included Wipro stating that it did not expect a material business impact from the US suspension of the PERM programme, Zydus reporting that a US Food and Drug Administration inspection had concluded with five observations, and Bharat Electronics announcing additional orders worth ₹533 crore since 17 September.
These developments could affect individual companies, although their broader relevance to India VIX would depend on their effect on the wider index.
Technical data showed a neutral daily trend rating. The classic pivot point was 14.47, with resistance levels at 15.00, 15.88 and 16.41, and support levels at 13.59, 13.06 and 12.18. Fibonacci resistance levels were 15.01, 15.34 and 15.88, while support levels were 13.93, 13.60 and 13.06. Camarilla resistance stood at 14.25, 14.38 and 14.51, with support at 13.99, 13.86 and 13.73.
October’s historical data showed positive India VIX returns in 9 out of 18 years. The maximum positive change was 26.73% in 2020, while the maximum negative change was 30.99% in 2013. The average positive change was 11.44%, the average negative change was -13.66%, and the overall average change was -1.11%.
India VIX stood at 14.49, up 3.19%, at 10:16 am on 14 October 2026. Its movement followed Tuesday’s 7.41% decline and occurred amid elevated crude oil prices, foreign equity outflows and pending US inflation data. The reported opening, intraday range and previous close provide the key reference points for understanding the index’s early-session movement.
