Mumbai, 16 October 2026: India VIX closed at 14.06, rising by 0.03 points or 0.21% during Friday’s trading session as domestic equities recovered from early losses, information technology stocks advanced following quarterly results, and global markets rebounded after a technology-led sell-off. However, profit-booking, elevated crude oil prices, foreign investment concerns and uncertainty surrounding global technology financing continued to shape the market environment. Available market reports indicated fluctuations in India VIX during the session, although its final closing value and percentage change require confirmation from the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
India VIX Trades Near 14 as Equities Recover
India VIX traded around the 14-point level during the session, with reported intraday readings reaching approximately 14.42. The volatility index reflected changing conditions as domestic benchmarks recovered from their initial declines. However, third-party market data showed differing figures for the index’s closing value, including readings around 13.95–14.25. The official closing figure could not be independently established from the available references.
India VIX measures the market’s expectation of volatility in the Nifty 50 over the next 30 calendar days, based on Nifty options prices. Its movement reflects changes in expected market fluctuations rather than the direction of the benchmark index itself.
Nifty Recovers Above 23,000 After Opening Declines
Indian equities began the session on a weaker note before recovering during the morning. The Sensex declined approximately 113 points to 74,187 at the opening, while the Nifty 50 slipped below 23,000 to around 22,967. By approximately 10:04 am, the Sensex had recovered to 74,470.20 and the Nifty stood at 23,054.55.
Subsequent market updates showed the Nifty rising 0.62% to 23,140.75, while the Sensex advanced 0.58% to 74,744.79. The recovery followed gains in information technology stocks, including Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services.
Despite the improvement in benchmark indices, intraday movements remained uneven. Reports also highlighted profit-booking after the Sensex crossed 74,500 and the Nifty moved above 23,050. The resulting fluctuations coincided with India VIX readings around 14.42, indicating that the recovery in equities did not eliminate uncertainty during the session.
Tech Mahindra Gains 7.1% as IT Earnings Support Markets
Information technology stocks contributed to the domestic market recovery following quarterly earnings announcements. Tech Mahindra advanced approximately 7.1%, supported by its second-quarter results and strong deal wins. Wipro gained around 5.7% after reporting better-than-expected quarterly revenue and highlighting opportunities from large deals.
The gains helped support the broader indices during the morning session. However, the sector’s performance was not uniform. Persistent Systems declined approximately 3% after reporting weaker-than-expected profit margins, highlighting differences in company-specific earnings outcomes.
The contrasting movements in technology shares formed part of the day’s market activity as participants assessed quarterly performance and business prospects. The strength in larger IT stocks coincided with the recovery in the Sensex and Nifty, while individual earnings-related declines continued to contribute to differences in share-price performance across the sector.
SEBI Revises Closing Auction and Derivatives Settlement Rules
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) revised the Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework, with changes covering the closing-auction period and the settlement methodology for expiring derivatives contracts.
The reported framework includes a 10-minute closing auction from 3:30 pm to 3:40 pm. It also restores the use of the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of the final 30 minutes of regular trading for settling expiring stock and index derivatives, rather than relying on the closing-auction price.
The changes address concerns surrounding closing-price fluctuations and their implications for derivatives settlement. The revised framework was also discussed in market coverage on 16 October, although the settlement changes had been reported previously.
Rupee Rebounds To ₹94.88 as RBI Measures Take Effect
The Indian rupee recovered to approximately ₹94.88 against the US dollar, recording its strongest weekly gain since March, according to reports published on 16 October. The movement followed measures by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the government intended to curb dollar demand and stabilise the currency.
However, concerns about foreign-exchange policy predictability and currency-market liquidity remained. Reports highlighted questions surrounding repeated changes to foreign-exchange rules and the possibility of further monetary tightening if currency pressures persisted.
The currency’s recovery coincided with the domestic equity rebound, while uncertainty over policy measures and interest rates remained part of the wider market environment.
Foreign Investment Outflows Remain a Concern for Indian Markets
Foreign portfolio investment remained a point of concern in the market outlook. Reports cited cumulative year-to-date foreign investor outflows of approximately $32.8 billion. This figure represents the cumulative amount reported for the year and does not indicate foreign selling specifically on 16 October.
The reported outflows formed part of the broader market context alongside currency movements and domestic equity fluctuations. The rupee’s recovery provided a contrasting development, while concerns about foreign investment flows remained relevant to assessments of Indian market conditions.
Asian Markets Rebound as Technology-Sector Concerns Persist
Global equity markets showed signs of recovery on 16 October following the previous session’s technology-led sell-off. South Korea’s KOSPI rose approximately 3% in early reporting after falling nearly 8% during the preceding session, while Japan’s Nikkei gained around 1.5%. US and European equity futures also edged higher.
At the same time, concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) financing continued. Reports highlighted rising borrowing costs for AI cloud provider CoreWeave, concerns about debt-funded data-centre investment and competitive developments in China’s next-generation dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) technology. These developments kept technology-sector financing and valuations in focus even as Asian equities recovered.
US Yields Stabilise as Dollar Weakens
US Treasury yields stabilised after movements during the preceding equity-market turmoil, while the US dollar headed towards its first weekly decline in more than a month. Market participants continued to assess inflation developments, Federal Reserve policy expectations and comments by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh during the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Bangkok.
The stabilisation in Treasury yields and the weaker dollar formed part of the international financial backdrop on 16 October. However, uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s next policy decision remained unresolved.
Crude Oil Stays Above $100 as Gold Reflects Caution
Brent crude futures declined approximately 0.39% to $105.51 per barrel during the morning, while US West Texas Intermediate crude fell around 0.55% to $97.43 per barrel. Prices moved lower as markets assessed supply expectations and Middle East tensions, including possible US action concerning restrictions on certain oil-carrying vessels.
Despite the declines, Brent remained above $100 per barrel. Elevated crude prices continued to be relevant to India’s import costs, inflation outlook and external balances.
Gold traded near $4,155 per ounce on the morning of 16 October, following a gain of approximately 1.6% in the previous session as investors sought safer assets amid equity-market turbulence. The gold movement largely reflected developments from the preceding session rather than a new event originating on Friday.
India VIX traded around 14 on 16 October as domestic equities recovered and global markets rebounded. Technology-sector earnings, SEBI’s revised market framework, rupee movements, foreign investment concerns, crude oil prices and international interest-rate uncertainty formed the session’s broader context.
