Mumbai, 12 October 2026: India VIX is trading higher by 0.62 points or 4.31% to 15.16 at 9:57 am IST on Monday despite the Indian equity markets starting off in the green, the Indian currency gaining and crude oil prices declining. The volatility index was at 14.37 at the opening bell, compared to its closing price of 14.38 in the previous session, and reached a high of 15.20 and low of 13.14. Early-session activity was impacted by currency market activity, geopolitical concerns, varied Asian equities and foreign portfolio outflow concerns.

India VIX Climbs 4.31% to 15.16 After Opening at 14.37

India VIX was trading high in Monday’s early session. The index was at 15.16, rising 4.31% at 9:57 am from its previous close of 14.38. The level at 14.37 was slightly below the previous close on Friday before the index started to move up higher.

The day’s recorded range was between 13.14 and 15.20 and its 52-week range was between 8.72 and 28.90. The index’s year-to-date return was 60.13%. It had a technical rating of neutral.

The October seasonality figures showed that India VIX had delivered positive returns in 9 out of 18 years. The month’s average historical change was -0.84%, with the maximum positive change recorded at 26.73% in 2020 and the maximum negative change at -30.99% in 2013. The average positive and negative changes were 11.97% and -13.66%, respectively.

RBI Rupee Measures Lift Currency as Dollar Demand Shifts

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced measures intended to ease pressure on the rupee, including redirecting oil companies’ dollar purchases away from the spot market and tightening rules governing certain foreign-exchange derivatives and forward transactions.

The rupee opened at ₹95.76 per US dollar, compared with Friday’s close of ₹96.73, appreciating by approximately 1%. The currency movement followed the RBI’s measures to address pressure on the domestic foreign-exchange market.

The developments formed an important part of Monday’s domestic market backdrop. However, the currency’s recovery coincided with a rise in India VIX to 15.16 by 9:57 am. The available figures establish that both movements occurred during the opening session, but do not quantify the individual contribution of the RBI measures to the volatility index.

Nifty Gains 0.27% as Sensex Opens 0.21% Higher

Indian equity benchmarks opened higher on Monday. At approximately 9:20 am IST, the Nifty 50 stood at 22,575.65, up 0.27%, while the Sensex was at 72,630.43, gaining 0.21%. The small-cap index rose 1.1%, and the mid-cap index advanced 0.4%.

The opening gains followed Friday’s recovery, when the Nifty 50 rose 1.30% to close at 22,520.45. India VIX declined 5.89% to 14.38 during that session, establishing the previous close used for Monday’s comparison.

Monday’s early-session data showed a different movement in the volatility index, which advanced to 15.16 even as the equity benchmarks opened higher. The available figures do not establish whether this divergence resulted from options positioning, hedging activity or another specific factor. Nevertheless, the simultaneous movements highlight that India VIX and the direction of the equity market do not necessarily move in opposite directions during every trading session.

Crude Oil Falls 1.5% Amid Energy Supply Developments

Crude oil prices declined amid reports of a proposed arrangement between Russia and Ukraine to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, alongside a US-brokered diesel-supply arrangement involving Moscow.

Brent crude fell approximately 1.5% to around $103 per barrel in the Indian market’s opening report. Broader global market figures placed Brent at approximately $103.01, down around 1.6%, while US crude stood at $90.11, lower by 1.9%.

The developments were significant for India because elevated crude prices affect the country’s import bill, current-account balance, currency and inflation outlook. Lower oil prices provided a counterpoint to concerns about energy costs. However, the proposed energy arrangements remained uncertain, and the available reports did not establish that the underlying geopolitical risks had been resolved.

Gulf Attacks Keep Energy Supply Risks In Focus

Renewed Houthi attacks affecting Saudi Arabia, including an attack on the country’s main airport on 11 October, added to concerns about the wider regional conflict. Reports also described earlier strikes and continuing geopolitical tensions, keeping the security of energy infrastructure and shipping routes in focus.

The developments formed a contrasting element of Monday’s global backdrop as crude prices declined following separate energy-related announcements. The possibility of supply disruptions remained relevant to oil-importing economies, including India, because a renewed increase in crude prices could affect currency and inflation conditions.

For the early India VIX session, the reports established competing developments: lower crude prices on one side and continuing regional tensions on the other. The available information does not isolate the effect of either development on the index’s move to 15.16.

Asian Markets Remain Mixed as US Futures Advance

Asian equities opened unevenly on Monday. South Korean equities fell 2.2% in an early global market snapshot, while Taiwanese equities declined 0.5%. Chinese blue-chip stocks edged up 0.1%, and Japan’s market remained closed for a holiday. Later reports recorded a smaller decline in South Korean equities, reflecting differences in the timing of market observations.

Meanwhile, US equity futures were modestly higher, with S&P 500 futures gaining approximately 0.3% and Nasdaq futures advancing around 0.4%. European futures were also positive in the same early snapshot.

Global markets were preparing for US bank earnings, including results from JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s upcoming results were expected to provide information about demand for artificial intelligence-related products and technology valuations.

A strong US dollar, elevated Treasury yields and upcoming US consumer price and producer price data also remained part of the macroeconomic backdrop. These were forward-looking developments rather than confirmed US inflation surprises on Monday morning.

October FPI Outflows Exceed ₹44,166 Crore

Foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows remained another domestic market concern. A report published on Monday put October-to-date withdrawals from Indian equities at approximately ₹44,166 crore, taking total outflows for 2026 above ₹3 lakh crore.

The reported factors behind the broader outflow trend included elevated crude prices, a strong US dollar, high US bond yields and the attraction of artificial intelligence-led markets elsewhere in Asia. The October figure was cumulative and did not represent foreign selling specifically during Monday’s opening session.

Domestic institutional investors had purchased approximately ₹4,743 crore of equities on Friday, while foreign portfolio investors sold around ₹3,569 crore. These figures provide context for the preceding session but should not be treated as Monday’s flows.

India VIX stood at 15.16 at 9:57 am on 12 October 2026, rising 4.31% from its previous close of 14.38. The session featured a stronger rupee, lower crude prices, positive domestic equity openings, mixed Asian markets and continuing geopolitical and foreign-flow concerns. The available data records these developments but does not quantify their individual contributions to the index’s movement.
