Bank of England Holds Key Rate; Slows Quantitative Tightening

The Bank of England left its interest rate unchanged and softened its pace of quantitative tightening on Thursday, as policymakers were wary about risks to inflation in the U.K. The BoE Monetary Policy Committee, led by Governor Andrew Bailey, voted 7-2 to maintain the bank rate at 4.00 per cent. The central bank had reduced the rate five times since August 2024, which is now at its lowest since early 2023.

U.S. Leading Economic Index Falls Much More Than Expected In August

Leading U.S. economic indicators fell by much more than expected in the month of August, according to a report released by the Conference Board on Thursday. The Conference Board said its leading economic index slid by 0.5 per cent in August after inching up by a revised 0.1 per cent in July. Economists had expected the leading economic index to edge down by 0.1 per cent, matching the dip originally reported for the previous month.

U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Pull Back Off Nearly Four-Year High

After reporting first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits climbed to a nearly four-year high in the previous week, the Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing initial jobless claims pulled back by more than expected in the week ended September 13th. The Labor Department said initial jobless claims fell to 231,000, a decrease of 33,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 264,000. Economists had expected jobless claims to pull back to 240,000 from the 263,000 originally reported for the previous week.
