Mumbai, July 9: Thursday’s trading session saw healthcare and telecom names lend support to the benchmark index, while weakness in select auto and pharmaceutical stocks kept overall gains in check.

Sun Pharma emerged as the day’s top performer on the Nifty 50, rising 2.53% to ₹1,936.00. SBI Life Insurance and Bharti Airtel followed with gains of 2.43% and 2.36%, respectively. Grasim, Shriram Finance and Max Healthcare also finished firmly in positive territory.

On the losing side, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories recorded the sharpest decline, while Eicher Motors and Maruti Suzuki also closed lower amid broad-based profit booking.

Defensive Stocks Find Buyers

Buying interest was concentrated in healthcare, insurance and telecom counters through much of the session. Sun Pharma and SBI Life remained among the strongest performers, while Bharti Airtel extended its gains with steady buying support.

Financial names such as Shriram Finance and Bajaj Finserv also ended higher, adding to the market’s positive breadth.

The Sun Pharma share price remained one of the day’s most closely tracked moves after the stock topped the Nifty 50 gainers list.

Profit Booking Weighs on Select Heavyweights

The downside was led by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, which slipped more than 5%, making it the weakest stock on the benchmark index. Auto stocks also saw some pressure, with Eicher Motors and Maruti Suzuki finishing in the red.

Technology major Infosys, along with ONGC and Axis Bank, also closed lower, limiting the benchmark’s upside.

Conclusion

Thursday’s session reflected selective buying rather than a broad-based rally. Sun Pharma, SBI Life and Bharti Airtel led the Nifty 50 gainers, while Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Eicher Motors and Maruti Suzuki finished among the biggest losers as investors rotated across sectors.
