Mumbai, August 20: Petrol and diesel prices today remained unchanged in New Delhi and Gurgaon, while fuel rates declined across several other major cities, including Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar. Hyderabad continued to record the highest petrol and diesel prices among the cities listed, at ₹115.69 and ₹103.82 a litre, respectively, while New Delhi had the lowest rates at ₹102.12 for petrol and ₹95.20 for diesel.
Crude oil prices remained largely steady on Thursday as investors weighed the outlook for the US-Iran conflict and its potential impact on global supplies, particularly shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Brent crude rose 0.08% to $91.7 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude was down 0.02% at $84.4 a barrel. Both benchmarks had gained for a fourth straight session on Wednesday, reaching their highest levels since July 24.
The market remains focused on developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial transit route for global oil supplies. While the United States has said the waterway remains open, Iran has claimed it is blocked. The conflicting assessments have added uncertainty for shipping companies, with some vessel operators avoiding the route amid heightened security risks.
The disruption concerns have helped keep a geopolitical premium embedded in crude prices, although investors remain cautious about how long the rally can continue. Any escalation in the conflict that threatens oil production or transit through the Gulf could push prices higher, while signs of de-escalation could ease supply concerns.
For India, sustained crude prices above $90 a barrel remain a key market risk, given the country’s dependence on imported oil. Higher energy costs could put pressure on the rupee and inflation while squeezing margins for fuel-consuming industries. Elevated crude prices could therefore continue to weigh on sentiment in Indian equities, even as global markets find some support from easing bond yields and a recovery in technology stocks.
