Mumbai, August 25: Petrol and diesel prices today remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities, with only marginal revisions recorded in a few markets. Kolkata has the highest petrol price among the four metros at ₹113.51 per litre, while Chandigarh has the lowest diesel rate among the cities tracked at ₹89.47 per litre.
Oil prices ticked up on Tuesday after falling more than 2% in the previous session, as investors assessed the impact of tougher US sanctions on Iran and weighed the risk of further disruption to crude supplies from the Middle East. Brent crude futures were up 0.3% at $92.4 a barrel while US West Texas Intermediate crude was up 0.4% at $85.4 a barrel.
Crude prices had rallied for two weeks before declining yesterday. The latest move followed the US decision to expand secondary sanctions aimed at cutting off Iran’s economic lifeline and forcing an end to the conflict. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said countries would need to sever business ties with Iran or risk losing access to the dollar-based financial system.
However, Washington has not yet identified the countries that could face penalties or specified when the measures would take effect. The softer initial response in oil markets suggests investors view economic pressure as less threatening to physical crude supplies than direct military action. Still, analysts warned that Iran retains the ability to disrupt shipping, keeping a risk premium embedded in oil prices.
Geopolitical risks remained elevated after an oil tanker was struck and disabled near Oman’s Ash Shishah, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations. Iran has also continued to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz and has threatened action against tankers it says have violated its rules. The waterway normally carries cargoes equivalent to about 20% of global oil consumption, making any disruption there a major risk for world energy markets.
Meanwhile, the United States is drawing down its emergency oil reserves amid supply disruptions linked to the conflict. US Strategic Petroleum Reserve crude stocks fell by about 3.7 million barrels last week to 289.7 million barrels, their lowest level since November 1982. The shrinking reserve buffer could add to market sensitivity if disruptions to Middle Eastern supplies intensify.
For oil-importing economies such as India, sustained crude prices above $90 a barrel remain a concern, as higher energy costs can put pressure on inflation, the trade deficit and the rupee. Markets will therefore continue to monitor developments around US-Iran sanctions, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and any fresh signs of supply disruption.
