Mumbai, August 14: Fuel prices remained largely stable across major Indian cities, with petrol prices unchanged in most metropolitan markets and diesel rates also showing limited movement. Petrol is priced at 102.12 per litre in Delhi, 113.51 in Kolkata, 111.21 in Mumbai and 107.77 in Chennai, while diesel rates stand at 95.20, 99.82, 97.83 and 99.55 per litre, respectively. However, several state capitals and other major cities witnessed daily revisions, with Bhubaneswar recording the sharpest increase in both petrol and diesel prices among the cities covered.

Oil prices edged higher on Friday after the United States threatened to maintain its naval blockade of Iran indefinitely, reviving concerns over crude supplies and offsetting pressure from a weaker demand outlook and a sharp build in U.S. inventories.

Brent crude futures rose 0.16% to $87.2 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained the same to $81.4 a barrel. Both benchmarks remained on track for weekly gains of around 4%, despite falling more than 2% in the previous session.

The latest move in oil prices came after Washington warned that it could maintain its naval blockade of Iran indefinitely and intensify economic pressure on Tehran. Ceasefire talks between the two sides have stalled, raising concerns that the conflict could continue to disrupt regional energy supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major focus for oil markets. The strategic waterway accounted for around 20% of global oil flows before the conflict, and restrictions on shipping through the strait have increased concerns about the availability and cost of crude.

The geopolitical risk premium in crude has been partly offset by growing concerns about global oil demand. The market was pressured on Thursday after U.S. data showed crude inventories increased by 17.4 million barrels, the biggest weekly build since January 2023.

At the same time, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the International Energy Agency have lowered their forecasts for oil demand growth for 2026. The combination of weaker demand expectations and rising U.S. inventories has prevented crude prices from extending their recent rally.

Despite Thursday’s sharp decline, Brent and WTI remain on track to post weekly gains of about 4%. Oil had previously risen for six consecutive sessions for Brent and five sessions for WTI before the latest retreat.

Analysts said the conflicting forces of supply disruption risks and weaker demand expectations are keeping prices volatile. The geopolitical backdrop is preventing a sharper decline in crude despite bearish inventory and demand signals.

For India, elevated crude prices remain a key risk for inflation, the rupee and corporate profitability. Since the country depends heavily on imported oil, any prolonged disruption to supplies through the Strait of Hormuz could increase India’s import bill and put pressure on the currency.

Higher crude prices could also weigh on sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals, logistics and other fuel-intensive industries, while upstream oil producers could benefit from stronger realisations. With Brent still around $87 a barrel and geopolitical tensions unresolved, oil prices are likely to remain an important trigger for Indian equity markets and the broader economy.

Here are the latest petrol and diesel prices across major Indian cities.
